I am looking for a free antivirus program for a friend.

I have AVG but I can't seem to find the free version anymore.

Most people are using one of the free Microsoft ones, Microsoft Security Essentials, etc.
There is Avira free, which I think is less demanding on the computer than AVG.

Click the big green "download" button near the top of the page on the left.

If you want AVG free, I suggest the Cnet download which seems to have fewer distractions to buy the paid version:

Just recently I installed AVG on my Samsung tablet. it was free! Has a nice feature, where if you lose your tablet, via AVG it can be rendered inoperable.

I'll make a search for the Windows version!

Lots of places to get the free version! Here's one! http://free.avg.com/ca-en/homepage

MSE is a very nice unintrusive program. I recommend the free download highly.

Me too! Have MSE on my two desktops and my laptop! Of course MSE won"'t work on an Android O/S.

This computer won't let me download MSE. Error msg not a valid Win2 application?

What? Win2? I thought that went out with Noah's Ark.

I downloaded the Avira program. It told me that it was incompatible with AVG.

So I went to uninstall AVG 2014.

Lo and behold if you want to uninstall it they ask you if you would like to downgrade to the 'free' version instead of uninstalling. So that's how you get the free version. You have to make them sit up and beg.

Well I am having a problem now with Avira.

Part of the program is not activated. The Web Protection and there is no way I know how to do it.

I have uninstalled the AVG.

This is what Avira tells me.
You may enable or disable the Real-Time Protection by clicking the ON/OFF button.

I do not see an ON/OFF button anywhere.

This program (Avira) is more complicated than anything I have used in the past.

After running an antivirus scan I was stuck with a program that didn't get removed and kept popping up.

Otshot.

Three or four hours later I got rid of it simply by sending it to the Recyle Bin and deleting all the contents.

This person I am helping downloads every game available along with 13 viruses and an anti virus program that is expired.

Fun time. When you try to uninstall a program that doesn't show up in the Add/Remove listing you can spend a lot of time fooling around.

This thing kept popping up and wanting to access the Outlook Contacts.

I am thinking of retiring from trying to fix someone else's computer.

When your friend has to PAY for repairs he will, perhaps learn to stay away from unsavoury internet sites.

I wouldn't call the sites unsavoury. Mainly games. But these days when you download anything baggage comes along.

Try the MSE download from a different source.

Do a reformat on this mess, campy. The only think you can do with a Tower of Babel is bulldoze it.

I had a friend once who downloaded every piece of crap offered to her. She was endlessly calling me because "my computer isn't working."
I would ask her: "What's this?" "I don't know."
"What's that?" I don't know.
"What does this program do?" "I don't know."

Her entire desktop was filled a hundred icons.

There was only one cure: Format C: /s/v

And then 6 months later, the same thing.

Then she lost her Windows Installation disc and I said BUY A NEW COMPUTER.

I uninstalled all the antivirus programs.

Got rid of the pop up program which I considered malware because it kept trying to access the Outlook contacts and a few other pop ups disappeared with it.

Then I tried the MSE download again and it worked.

Did a full scan and now that computer is working like new.

Lightning fast using Internet Explorer.

If you are deleting anything troublesome to the Recycle Bin make sure you empty the bin before continuing with other installations because somehow the bug is still there.
