More Canadians are pretending to be Americans than ever, but it’s only so they can watch better Netflix.

Canadians are bypassing Netflix region locks and watching television shows and movies that are supposed to only be available to American Netflix subscribers.

When it comes to online streaming services, there is a vast disparity between what’s available to Canadians and what is available to Americans. This is mostly due to licensing agreements in the various countries in which Netflix is available. Since these restrictions are regional, companies like Netflix often use IP addresses to block certain pieces of content from certain countries.

But because this practice is so widespread, so are the services invented to get around it.

Services like Toronto-based Unblock Us have made the process of changing a computer’s IP address ridiculously easy, even for people that aren’t that technically inclined. For a relatively low monthly fee ($4.99 a month) and with a few simple button presses, Canadians now have the ability to access a wealth of content that they previously couldn’t simply by telling their computer to pretend it’s in a different country.

Is this practice not illegal? How come Canada.com can post how to do this if it is criminal, sort of like stealing services.

However that raises the Netflix streaming fee from $7.99 + tax to $12.98 + tax. And then I wonder how you pay the bill without giving away the game?

I have a subscription to the British Medical Journal that is freely available to British residents but not to ALIENS. All I had to do was look up the mail code of a prominent London Hotel.

All you are doing is changing your IP address so that the website you are accessing doesn't know what country you are calling from.

It's like using a proxy address. Some of those are free.

I don't think it's illegal.

It bugs me when I can't access a link on this forum because it's not available in Canada.

A few of my relatives are streaming Net flex from the USA with the use of a free code. I intend to do this once my huge pool of TV shows on my PVR dries up. I want to see the Spacey series plus something called Hemlock street or road.
