My search for a filter.

I went on my tenth day of searching for an air intake filter for an older cool mist humidifier yesterday. After searching the net for days and phoning all the companies and going to places like Canadian Tire and Walmart, it was a no go. A store clerk told me that these companies did that, stopped manufacturing the filters to force one to buy a new model. I did do that, along with an extra filter.

It really bugged me so I went to a breathing rehabilitation clinic and the really nice lady in charge took the filter and got on the phone. Her company makes those but not in the correct size, but she did tell me what they are made of. Apparently they are felt that is sprayed with something to keep the fibers from breaking down. She said to get a piece of white felt, cover the side that goes in the machine with 100% organic cotton and zigzag sew it the correct size. Got that; the one meter of felt for $5 and will be able to make many filters.

I really do not like companies that do things like this; stop manufacturing a needed component of their product. Further more the filter for the new machine I got is over $22; that is highway robbery.

Makes one have a big bad taste in their mouth and not trust these companies how can they take advantage of people like that.

BTW she also told me how to keep the water from building bacteria, just put in a tbsp of vinegar in it and when you clean the tanks wash with dish soap and rinse with a solution of water and 1/4 cup of vinegar.

We really have to educate ourselves to not be taken for a ride.

Hi Darcie, Good for you to think of going to the clinic, and fabulous help you got there. Whenever that happens to me I write a letter to the management and tell them how much their employee helped me. Service above and beyond needs recognition. If I think that the service might not be appropriate according to the higher ups, John and I send flowers or chocolates to the employee.

Angora, I thought of flowers too, she was so darn competent. I doubt her boss would appreciate the information she gave me.

I went through the same song and dance with an AIR-KING 3-gallon humidifier but found the filters/wicks online for about $4 each. I get a season out of one before it turns to sludge. I bought 4 for me and 4 for a friend with the same unit (saves shipping costs in quantity.)
Prices were all over the lot, even up to $12.12.

I thought of making my own but then thought I might go through a lot of trouble and wind up with something that restricted the airflow when wet.
I had learned my lesson when I attached an air filter to a 20 inch fan. It worked fine with a clean filter on low speed. Dirty filter and high speed = Blown Fan Motor.

Reminds me...time to pull the humidifier out of the closet. My nose is getting crusty in the morning already, best get humidified before it starts bleeding.

I couldn't find a Toyota cabin filter in big box stores, so I bought a big furnace filter and cut off a piece just the right size to replace the Toyota one. I think it was a Hepa filter and about $15. I have enough filter material to make quite a few car cabin filters.

What a good idea Delphi. I have a highlander. Where would I find the cabin filter?
