I should replace my 30 inch electric stove one of these days and am not sure whether to get the glass topped one or stick to the old style burners. Some people like the glass tops and others find them hard to clean. I just want a basic stove with a self-cleaning oven and like dealing with the rep. at Sears, though Sears sounds kind of shaky these days. Any advice?

I do like the glass tops, have one in Montreal and a regular stove in London.

All I have as advice is don't get a white top, every little thing shows up, annoys me that I have to wait for it to cool down to clean it. I use a device with a razor blade and then one of those Mr.Clean pads. To me the glass tops are easier to clean than the regular stoves.

With my self clean ovens I still have to dive in there and wipe the ashes out afterwards. I want one that zaps the spills to oblivion, don't think that will happen any time soon.

It still rankles that I bought something from Eaton's and paid cash; when it came to warranty time of course they were no more. With large appliances service counts. I have been very happy with Future Shop service and standing behind what they sell.

I just got a new electric one and after much reflection I got the old fashioned kind with the burners. I decided that cooking was becoming more of a chore and I didn't want to have to deal with anything new. Ive used the others at my son's and they wouldn't let me shake the pan..I like to shake the pan. So Im sticking with the old ways.

We've had glass topped stoves for the past 15 years, and wouldn't go back to the old "ring" style. We find the glass top much easier to clean, but you have to keep it clean. We've had black and white, my wife prefers the white and says the black top shows every mark. I would also pay the extra for the convection model, much more efficient.

I like my glass top from Sears. I almost sent it back when it came with a white top instead of the dark one I had ordered. But it was too much trouble, so I kept it. Now I like the white top because you can tell when it is dirty and therefore you are assured that nothing burns on for too long. In that way, maybe you have to clean it more often. You do have to buy a cleaner for glass tops. I like the fact that nothing can drip down below where it is hard to clean. ---- However, you do have to have flat bottom pans and be careful that there is nothing abrasive that might scratch the top. If you shook a pan that wasn't smooth, you may get a scratch on the surface that cannot be removed.

As for ovens, I have the convection and also ceramic racks which do not have to be removed during cleaning. They are cleaned right along with the oven. It has many more bells and whistles which I do not use, but had to get them in order to get the ceramic racks.

Last 70 years: GAS STOVES.
Tried electric a couple times at beach rentals...hated them.

Only advantage of electrics is the broiler. It broils without creating steam like gas. So you don't get STEAMED STEAK, a waste of good meat.

I bought a Frigidaire glass top when I moved here 9 years ago. The top is charcoal with a black ring around each burner. My one complaint is the front right burner is an expandable element so can accommodate either a smaller pot or a large one, and when turned down to minimum, it still cooks too high. I believe someone on here has the same type as mine and has the same problem. Unfortunately, I did not get a convection oven and wish I had. Myself, I would never go back to the regular burners.

Take care,
Pat

Thanks for the feedback. What about cast iron fry pans? Do they scratch the glass?

Yes, probably. But check out the newer types, there may now be something similar that you could use.

You might want to check out this site, http://www.cookware.org/glasscooktops.php

One more tip if you get a glasstop stove. Most kitchens have cupboards above the stove, so make sure you only put light plastic dishes or containers in these locations since accidentally dropping a glass, coffee cup, or ceramic bowl on your glass top stove will not be good.

There is nothing that is as good as a cast iron fry pan. I was told that the shaking of pan that John and I do would scratch the glass top. We are not stirrers we are shakers, I just like to be in control with no rules. Also at my age I don't really like to change simple things like the way I cook. I'm ok with changing big things but not little things that make my life comfortable. But, that's me. Im not arguing Im just saying how I feel .

I had the same quandary when I bought my present stove.

During the time that I worked in the electrical business, I replaced the calrod elements from time to time.
Its a simple routine that anybody is capable of. If a glass top element fails, the whole top must be replaced. Considerably more expensive.
With this in mind, I settled for individual elements.

My daughter has a gas stove and it seems to have better control of the heat. Im thinking of switching over to gas!

Angora, I shake the pans all the time on my glass top. Why can't you shake the pan?
I guess shaking it in contact with the glass top can scratch it. Some pans state they are not suitable for use on a glass cook top.

I was looking all over for a double boiler and found one at Walmart. When I got to the counter I read the instructions and not recommended.

It's one of those ceramic finishes which are kind of bumpy.

But I taught myself the chef flip with the pan off the top of the stove.

Took me a while to learn it. It's all in the wrist and eye co-ordination. Use dry beans to practice.

If I want to stir stuff in the pan without flipping it I use a wooden dowel. I have a stack of them. They are very handy for stirring anything and don't scratch.
