HBO ran ANGELS IN AMERICA, Parts One and Two, back to back last weekend ...nearly 7 hours. We had seen the play and the also the "TV movie" 10 years ago but revisiting it was an unalloyed delight. We watched it over 2 nights. As brilliant as the play was on Broadway, the TV movie was better. We are both theater and movie people but magnificent stuff like this can still blow us away. It is hard to place praise, the actors all knew this was going to be a major stamp on their careers and most of them had been touched or smacked by the AIDS scourge. So in no particular order of BRILLIANCE" Al Pacino is a stupendous portrayal of Roy Cohn..you have never seen anything like this. Meryl Streep as a Mormon mother and a RABBI. Emma Thompson as a lesbian nurse and a thrilling powerful avenging ANGEL. Jeffrey Wright in several parts showing acting skills almost unimagineable. Stunning performances by Mary-Louise Parker, Justin Kirk (both of WEEDS,) Ben Shenkman and Patrick Wilson. This was EPIC television. Kudos to writer, Tony Kushner, and director, the ever wonderful Mike Nichols. See it if you can. Edited by Trotsky, Dec 6 2013, 06:56 AM.

Absolute agreement, Trotsky....it moved me to tears when it first aired....I am sure this go around (if I can find it) will be no different. |
