He sure sounds like Elvis, but I'm amazed the Quebec language police allowed him to sing live in English, the radio station will probably be fined or shut down. |

Obviously you are joking. There are large American companies that operate in the middle of Montreal entirely in English. We even have the St. Patrick's day parade there. I am wondering if you get a funny bone once you cross into Alberta. When my sister & husband came and drove through Quebec last year they were amazed that they could function entirely in English while there no matter where they went. Can't say the same for functioning in French in Alberta. |

Why would anyone want to function in French in Alberta ? We've got more Ukrainians, Chinese, Japanese, and Pakistanis than Frenchmen. Ever since the National Energy policy in the early 80s, French is a dirty word out here, but my grandson is excelling at learning it, and some people actually know who Justin Trudeau is . So, if I don't converse with you again, " avoir une grande nuit " |

Just wondered why the two official languages of the country are not respected, either by the French Quebecois, or the English Albertan. Many other languages are hanging around the country BUT they are not the official languages of the country. Have to say that we mainly have lots of Chinese here, then Arabs. Isn't that illegal? I'm sure I read that businesses with more than a few employees must operate in French. Isn't that why so many moved out of Montreal? There are a lot of French immersion schools in Alberta and quite a few Francophone communities. We are trying to become more bilingual. Edited by Delphi51, Dec 13 2013, 03:26 PM.

Apparently not! I changed my post after failing to find that wording in bill 101. It is in bill 14 but that one was withdrawn a few days ago. |

Sure is, the Quebec gov. gave them training dollars when they first came in 2007, the employees only sell to Americans so it is all perfectly legal. If the French want a job there they have to speak, read, & write English well. The English do not have to speak French at all, and they work in English also. |

Reading these posts sure shows the misinformation and prejudice that is passed for fact. Sometimes I cannot believe my ears at the misinformation that people really believe. I listened in disbelief to a story that a lady whose English wasn't that good had been fed by someone at the local coffee shop. I sometimes wonder why some people don't get sued. |

I have a hard time with that too, I mean, look at the misinformation on here all the time, not to mention people who continually repeat Liberal attack ads truth and totally misinform people etc. etc. We have to learn to be more discerning. However, here's some info for your perusal. The language cops are after yogurt spoons now http://globalnews.ca/news/660744/quebec-language-police-target-frozen-yogurt-spoons/ more restaurants http://www.cbc.ca/news/canada/montreal/quebec-language-police-aim-at-more-montreal-restaurants-1.1332751 Several restaurants, including Joe Beef, a high-end establishment in Montreal's Little Burgundy neighbourhood, and Brasserie Holder, an eatery located in Montreal's Old Port, say they have been ordered to remove English or foreign words from menus and decor. According to Maurice Holder, the owner of Brasserie Holder, the Office québécois de la langue française (OQLF) asked the restaurant to comply with the law, Bill 101, and get rid of several things around the kitchen. Holder said his chef's grocery list, which was written on a blackboard when the language police dropped by the restaurant, said "salade, oeuf, sucre and steak." There sure is. QUEBEC - The Quebec government has introduced a new initiative that encourages cabinet ministers to speak only French to their counterparts from other provinces and Ottawa. The strategy is part of the Parti Quebecois' plan to push its sovereigntist agenda http://www.huffingtonpost.ca/2013/04/03/quebec-language-guidelines-minister_n_3008734.html |
