Joan Fontaine Dies

Joan Fontaine, the patrician blond actress who rose to stardom as a haunted second wife in the Alfred Hitchcock film “Rebecca” in 1940 and won an Academy Award for her portrayal of a terrified newlywed in Hitchcock’s “Suspicion,” died at her home in Carmel, Calif., on Sunday. She was 96.

The oldies:
Her older sister, JOAN FONTAINE, still sails on at 97.

But the oldest actor still alive is the famous LOUISE RAINER who started in films in 1932...she's 103. Her Oscar wins were 1936 and 1937 so after she fled Vienna and the Nazis took over Austria.

ELI WALLACH was just 98 and KIRK DOUGLAS 97, but how he suffered with that major stroke.

I think you mean, Olivia de Haviland. Is she still alive. They must have strong genes.

How silly of me, of course: Olivia at 97 is still alive and retired in Paris. (De Havilland is the family name...but I don't think it is the aircraft $$$family$$$.)

I wonder what caused the huge rift between sisters where they had not spoken in years....?

The actress and her sister were at loggerheads throughout their lives and finally stopped speaking to each other in 1975 after their mother died of cancer.

Fontaine said de Havilland had not invited her to the memorial service, but her sister claimed Fontaine had said she was too busy to attend.

'I married first, won the Oscar before Olivia did, and if I die first, she'll undoubtedly be livid because I beat her to it,' Fontaine was quoted as telling the Hollywood Reporter in 1978, according to the Washington Post.
