This put me in mind of something that I saw yesterday. Our birdfeeder was empty so the birds were on the ground in the deep snow trying to scare up some seed. They do this in a strange little hop forward to dig in the snow. They look like a kindergarten class playing The Hokey Pokey.' .you put your whole body in, you put your whole body out' they don't shake themselves about but just keep repeating the motion. It is fascinating to watch. V. cute too.

Very interesting expecially the part about the magnetic field helping the fox. The term "dumb like a fox" comes to mind.

I watched foxes on the golf course using the same technique among the reeds close to the water.

I saw a show on NGEO on this amazing and beautiful fox. Fascinating.
But this is the first I have heard about the North orientation. I thought it was all done by sound.

Sound and the tiniest movement of grass or snow is what I think does it.

The magnetic theory has been around for a long time, but is highly suspect.
