We were picking up cat food at our local pet supply shop yesterday, when I noticed a flyer advertising a newly opened food bank for pets -- kind of a shock. But on reflection, if people fall on hard times and have trouble feeding themselves, they will certainly have difficulty feeding their cat or dog. You heard of anything similar in you neck of the woods? Edited by heatseeker, Dec 23 2013, 01:23 AM.

Yes, we have them in Texas. http://pawsitivelytexas.com/resources-for-pet-owners/resources-for-animal-rescues/ According to this, they are also in most large cities. http://www.petco.com/petco_Page_PC_foundationfoodbank_Nav_1483.aspx |

Have not heard of this Heat, but when I lived at Bobcaygeon the Pet Valu had a bin where shoppers could deposit food for needy cats and dogs. Unfortunately, I did not think to ask just where they sent these donations. Just now looking around, and it seems there has been Project Maddie for a few years which was started by a young woman, and I wonder if this is the one for which you saw the flyer. http://www.thestar.com/news/gta/2010/12/02/pet_food_bank_rescued_by_firefighters.html Take care, Pat |

This is a new one, opened a couple of weeks ago on Queen Street East in Leslieville, if my recollection is accurate. |

How about goldfish food? Free mice for pet snakes? In China, and the Arctic Regions, when times get tough, people have a way with dealing with pets. They EAT them. Edited by Trotsky, Dec 23 2013, 03:07 AM.

Sounds like a good idea as pet food is so expensive, and as has been said, if people have trouble feeding themselves, how will they feed their pets? Just from my cat feeding friends at Bobcaygeon, I know they often go without eating themselves to feed their own (now up to 4 cats) and all the feral cats in the woods across the street from their apartment. Take care, Pat |

Here you can go to the local Humane Society to get food. I didn't know this, but there was a recent story in our local paper. A woman stole a fluffy white kitten, took it out to her car, then came back into the Humane society to get food. Fortunately this was all caught on camera and they did get the kitten back. |

Pet rescues, like my daughter's are grateful for food too. The ceo, members of the board etc use their own money to buy food an get vet care unless kind people donate. |
