Red and Blue's first and perhaps last New Year's

John got me a beautiful beige turtleneck Cashmere sweater for Christmas to replace the wool sweater the cats tore to shreds. It was from Lord and Taylor and smelled perfumy. I hand washed it once and it still smelled so I put it out - of reach I thought - to air out and was going to hand wash it again tomorrow. While I was in the shower just now, Red tore it to shreds....never even had a chance to wear it.

Anyone want two very cute but impossible cats?

I am speechless. You are indeed a cat lover, I on the other hand would like the cashmere sweater better.

Fuzzy...please explain?

Darcie, my next sweater is going to be knit from cat fur!

Fuzzy, you do recall that Red and Blue can open most drawers?

Delphi, they were strays! Adopted from a shelter, to which they may be returned.....

I think anything you don't want them to get will have to go in the spare bedroom, with the door kept closed. I wonder if they have some Siamese in their blood; Siamese are keen on chewing wool.

My good friend at the lake, where I spend time when I head that way now, has 3 cats - all rescued extremely young and bottle fed. ALL DOORS in their 4,000 sq. ft. home are kept closed except for the kitchen and two bedrooms where nothing is left around for them to get into. Once in a while one will jump up on the table, but quickly receives a sharp "NO" and that ends that.

Take care,
Pat

Oh bj, I adore your cats. They give me so much pleasure and make Ruckus seem docile.

You are a dear and wonderful person. Have the best New Year you've ever had. All good things will come to you. I will make it my plea to the Universe.

Fuzzy, Red didn't chew it, he clawed it to pieces. and yes we do clip their nails. and Blue has destroyed the arm of a two year old very expensive love seat. We do say a firm "no." and we have a loaded water pistol in every room, and if we see them clawing furniture or anything else they get a firm "no" and a squirt. They know they are being naughty, but they do it anyhow. We have never declawed any cat we owned except for the first one before we understood how detrimental it was to cats, but I am seriously reconsidering that decision. Strangely, they have never scratched us....just inanimate objects. But in less than a year they have cost us $1000's of damage.

I have a friend with a young indoor cat who thinks the water spray is a sport. He teases her with a forbidden act just to get her reaching for the squirt bottle and then he runs. He has kept them up so much at night that he was given a bed in the bathroom where they shut him in one night. When Milo saw the bed his behaviour improved a little but he still ends up locked in the bathroom some nights when he throws himself at their bedroom door and claws at the carpet outside it. There is no way to get any sleep if they let him into bed with them and the bathroom is a safe alternative.

Milo goes to the new couch and starts to claw at it while watching his mistress for her reaction - play time!

Milo has potential to be a mugger cat too, as he is well practiced in throwing himself at the back of my friend's knees and has almost taken her down on occasion.

Indoor cats have an enormous amount of energy they need to burn off but I guess you know that by now BJ, X2.
I keep telling friend that Milo will mellow as he ages but even the lily leaf he ingested one Easter didn't quite kill him or slow him down all that much once he recovered. That's how I got the white lily in my garden.

Most of our furniture has arms in shreds. Oddly enough it hasn't been our more active cats who've done most of the damage but our sweeter cats. Butter, the beauty is a determined scratcher. We've never found a way to stop them and most of them have been outdoor cats. Our tv room furniture is a kind of a buttery suede like stuff and they never touch it. That's the only kind I'll buy from now on. If I only knew what it was.

There s an alternative to declawing BJ, the nail covers. Mind you they have to be replaced periodically. http://www.softpaws.com/

Many Canadian veterinarians are refusing to declaw cats, saying the procedure is painful and unnecessary, but there is a simple solution for pet owners who are looking to stop their felines from scratching and clawing furniture.
Despite what the name implies, declawing is actually a series of bone amputations, sometimes referred to as de-knuckling. The cat’s tendons, nerves and ligaments are also cut off and the animal needs several days of painkillers to recover. The procedure is banned in Europe and strongly discouraged here in Canada.
Kelowna veterinarian Dr. Marco Veenis is the President of the Society of BC Veterinarians and is one of a growing number of vets who won’t do the procedure. Instead, he recommends cat owners use a cute and colourful alternative: Soft Paws.
“[They’re] basically fake little nails that you glue over their regular nails and they have soft plastic points so they can't scratch the furniture," said Dr. Veenis.
The application of the vinyl, blunt nail caps – also marketed as Soft Claws – are glued to the claws, with the intention that the blunt end won’t be sharp enough to cause damage.
Jennifer Carr-Zingle is a cat owner who knows the damage a feisty feline can do to furniture. Her rescue cat Domino prefers to sharpen its nails on the couch rather than a six foot cat condo and scratching post. But using Soft Paws have helped.
Carr-Zingle’s cat Domino uses the plastic nail covers and is often sporting a glittery set of pink and blue claws.
"It costs about $40 to have them done, but it's totally worth it. They say they last about a month, but we get about three months out of them, so it's not really that expensive," said Carr-Zingle.
You can order Soft Paws online and put them on yourself or you can have a vet’s assistant do it for you. The Soft Paws come in several sizes and cost about $20 for a four to six month supply.

Cats own us, no matter what we do to dissuade an action we do not like they will always do what they want if they like it!

I doubt I could find a vet here that would do it even if we wanted it done. Plus DH would most certainly be kicked off the board of our Island Animal Shelter.

Dr Veenis is the Kelowna vet to whom we took Pandora when she got very constipated on her first RV trip to the Canadian Okanogan!

We really liked him, so all BCers : if you need a vet and can get your pet to kelowna, we highly recommend him.
