Customs dog can smell your cash Posted Image NEW RECRUIT: Customs' sniffer dog Kane was bred in Australia. Customs' newest sniffer dog Kane has scored his first "kill" at Christchurch Airport. The spirited black labrador stepped up to the plate with an interception of cash on a passenger. In this instance, the haul fell slightly short of $10,000 - just below the figure that needs to be declared. Just two months into training, Kane is shaping up nicely to become fully operational in April. Source Link |

It's good to know that animals can be used by the government to take away the last vestiges of our privacy. So then we go on vacation with some coins and a few credit cards? Would a handful of quarters go very far in London or Paris? I wonder if the dogs can smell travelers checks. Edited by Trotsky, Jan 10 2014, 09:43 AM.

With the convenience of credit cards, there really is no need to carry large amounts of cash unless it is for money laundering purposes. Quite often when I come across the border, customs ask if I have more than $10,000. As in New Zealand, 10,000 is allowed going north or south. A dog can smell a tsp of sugar in one (possibley two) olympic size pool. http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/nova/nature/dogs-sense-of-smell.html Edited by erka, Jan 10 2014, 12:30 PM.

Usually it's money coming in from SE Asia and China. Fruit, apples in particular ... and honey, are the products mostly affected by biosecurity instant fines of NZ$500 ... for not declaring them properly on entry. Edited by Kahu, Jan 10 2014, 12:38 PM.
