| Do animals exhibit loyalty to each other? | |

Animal loyalty to each other? I have read that among felines, once kittens are weaned, not even mother cats are protective of their offspring, let alone other felines or adoptees in the same household. Today's adventures of Red and Blue certainly put that notion to rest. We noticed that Red was emitting a foul odor and upon closer examination we realized he had not fully groomed himself after using the litter box and needed a bath. So we got out a fluffy towel, turned the huge kitchen sink with the pull out sprayer water to a comfortable warm, John put on heavy duty gloves and held the front end of Red on the counter, while I set to work on the rear end. Red's cries were pitiful and Blue came running and actually attacked John. He was clearly trying to free or rescue Red. Fortunately I was able to complete the task, and all is back to normal, but I see this as clear proof that Red and Blue are extremely protective of one another. Thoughts? |

I think it depends on the cat. I have had nurturing cats, cats whom you would describe as quite caring, and other cats who obviously are quite self-absorbed. |

I think Red & Blue own a good pair of humans. As I alluded to before, how much longer are you going to put up with this ? You need to give your collective heads a shake, and think... where are you going to be in a year from now if the cats haven't put you in a mental home ? Cat slaves ? Obviously these cats and you aren't destined to be together, you have choices.. but I think your common sense is clouded dealing with these 2. |

and today, Blue was crawling around behind our printer and now the printer is dead. We have a friend who is a techie coming over tomorrow to try to fix it. It is a brand new printer.... DT. Logic would dictate that we return these cats to the shelter (it is a no kill shelter), but we LOVE them.....just trying to outlast their teenage years..... |

I wish you luck, lots of parents have their 40 yr old teenagers still living at home with them. I loved and had tears in my eyes the last 5 pets we had to depart ways with, but there comes a time when you have to make a decision on what is right for the relationship. |

My daughter has an 8 year old Yorkie/Chihuahua female dog who HATES cats! My daughter wanted a cat and kept telling the dog that she was going have a kitten for a friend! The kitten arrived and never having met a dog before, ran over to the dog and started to cuddle! Now they are groom each other and are the best of friends! |

Dialtone, why don't you and Mrs. DT plan to join us in an RV park in the Canadian Okanogan the first week of October for the wine festival and you can meet Red and Blue in person. I guaranty you will both fall in love with them. Everyone does. |

I had some very unfriendly chickens, bought the kind who lay the eggs you buy in supermarkets, bad idea. However they exhibited extreme loyalty and when I tried to catch them to go to the abitour they really ganged up and attacked me. |

Camping, Wine, Okanogan ? that does sound tempting, but it's an 800 km one way trip over mountain highways so pulling a trailer in Oct might be risky. I'm sure Red & Blue are great cats, but just have a few personality traits. In 1995 we adopted 2 black lab puppies, a brother and sister, they were adorable and we managed to train them quickly and easily. The problems started as they got older, they competed with each other over everything and wouldn't listen or obey if together. It was almost like they had ESP, and being we were on an unfenced acreage, it was problematic every time they were outside. We finally had to split them up, and our best friends in Calgary took the male, and we kept the female.. all problems disappeared. We had to put her down in 2009 after she had a stroke at 14, her brother was put down a few months before. Cats and dogs have personalities just like humans, and that includes traits like jealousy, and they sure can be devious at times. Edited by Dialtone, Jan 13 2014, 05:14 AM.

We had a stupid Persian who did not know how to clean her ass. We had to go through the aggravation of spraying her filthy goo-goo while holding her down in the bathtub at least twice a week. We both got to dread the two man task. It got to the point where she caught on and we had to chase her around first. The smart cat would actually roll her eyes at the dummy and even give her the occasional swat. Getting a second female cat was a BIG mistake. First cat was too territorial, not uncommon. They truly hated one another and would only rarely be in the same room...usually only at feeding time. And again: that's why I love OTHER people's cats. Edited by Trotsky, Jan 13 2014, 06:02 AM.

Little Roland, my Chihuahua does not have a mean bone in his body. He is friendly, has never bitten anyone and happily lets strangers pet him. When I tie him up outside the library I often see people stop to talk to him as they seem fascinated by such a small personable dog and Roland enjoys the attention. Roland was taken out a lot to meet people when he was a pup and I think that may help though it is said that dogs are similar to their people. laugh123 I didn't want a mean dog. Since then I have met with a few more long coat chihuahuas and most people who have ever had anything to do with them say they are sweet natured. Roland certainly is a sweetie. Even when the grandchild has pulled his leg and made him cry he has not bitten! Posted Image Edited by Dana, Jan 13 2014, 06:50 AM.

Roland is absolutely adorable Dana, or suppose I should say handsome. Easy to see why folks want to stop and chat with him. I would too. Take care, Pat |
