Thanks Pat, that was a great video, and brings back some warm memories of my Uncle's farm in Ontario. One summer when I was probably about 6, my father and I went to stay for a week, and for a couple days we picked up hay off a field with his team of Clydesdale horses and a hay wagon. The horses drove themselves with the simple Gee, Haw, and Gee-up, and Whoa commands, it was quite an experience. One of the horses was so big he had trouble getting into the bottom door of the barn, when he put his head down, he stumbled a bit and stepped on my cousin's foot, nothing broken but it was black and blue for weeks after. A few years later, we bought our own small farm and we bought our own Clydesdale, she was about 16 yrs old when we got her, blind in one eye, but she could still pull a sleigh, and for us kids was our pride and joy. biggrin 04 |

Thanks, Pat, for the reminder of that ad. It was one of the sweetest Super Bowl ads I have ever seen, I think it was in everyone's top 10 ad for Super Bowl 2013. I wonder if they can top it this year? |

Pirongia Cyldesdales There are still quite a few farms which use horse power throughout the country. My Great Uncle was the last Blacksmith/Farrier in Wellington NZ ... I remember going to the smithy not long after he died. |

My Granddaughter sent me a picture of her daughter 5 years old. She was supposed to just stand and hang on to the three big while her mother opened a gate. She had a lead on each one. It I knew how to do it I would forward a picture. Her parents have about 40 of these big horses. They won top in their class at Calgary in the last 3 years. Do you remember the Molsons Belgium team They used to live north of Toronto. |

They are beautiful. We were lucky enough to see them at the Spanish Riding School in Vienna at a special show practice. NZ has a succesful Olympic equestrian team which is based in the UK in the season for European eventing ... the Germans, and Austrians are masters of the dressage and we now have an Austrian-Swiss Dressage guru here in NZ so that we can further upskill in that area. Its a VERY expensive sport indeed. UK Mentor Dressage Link Edited by Kahu, Jan 29 2014, 04:04 PM.

My grandfather's family raised Clysdales in Poland. They had the most magnificent animals.. Years later after they arrived in Canada, when he had enough money he bought 4 to work on his farm. I saw photos of them Queenie, Duchess, Blackie and Joe... I will ask my aunt if she still has the photos I used to think looking at them in photos they were gigantic. My grandfather loved those horses and from the photos the affection was returned......... |

These horses are call the gentle giants and for good reason. I remember one time sitting at the local fair and a man came by with a pair of those little horses you see and he was having a hard time holding on to them, they were walking on their hind legs, rather frightening. A few minutes a boy of about ten walked by with one rope of seven of the big ones as they lumbered casually behind him. |
