Sochi company hired to kill stray dogs ahead of Olympic Games

Thousands of stray dogs have been living amid the mud and rubble of Olympic construction sites, roaming the streets and snowy mountainsides, and begging for scraps of food.

But as the games drew near, authorities have turned to a company to catch and kill the animals so they don't bother Sochi's new visitors — or even wander into an Olympic event.

Alexei Sorokin, director general of pest control firm Basya Services, told The Associated Press that his company had a contract to exterminate the animals throughout the Olympics, which open Friday.

Sorokin described his company as being involved in the "catching and disposing" of dogs, although he refused to specify how the dogs would be killed or say where they would take the carcasses.

The dogs have been causing numerous problems, Sorokin said Monday, including "biting children."

If the dogs were causing all sorts of problems ie: biting children why did they wait till the Olympics to get rid of them? Not believable IMO.

I think they did this with stray cats in China before theirs.

I didn't know that? Do we have stray dogs? I know we may have some dogs that got away from home but I haven't ever seen a stray dog.

Seriously Wildie?
I would venture to say that all municipalities have animal control services. They do try to adopt them out, but can only keep them for so long, then they are destroyed.

I really doubt that any sizeable proportion of strays get adopted. Most are killed, no matter how cute the ads for the companies.

The Humane Society operates here, but a commercial business is contracted by the city for animal control.

Where I lived before (a small community) One individual was hired to 'control' wild? animals.
