Curious that thieves are finding anything worthwhile in the mail. All I get is bills and statements. I would say it is pretty easy to get keys made once they steal one of the locks, unless Canada Post has made every lock different. They should be able to use cameras or something to catch the thieves. |

Some credit card access cheques that were mailed to me were once, either delivered to the wrong address or stolen from the box. They were used and the credit card fraud people took care of it, whatever they did - no feedback and no bill. I think it would be a random grab hoping to get lucky or else for identity theft info. I would have no way of knowing for egs. if a credit card co sent me a renewal card and it went missing until the expiry date or after fraudulent use. How many boxes are there? How expensive would it be to have cameras monitoring all of them? I don' think that would work too well once thieves knew they were there anyway. Edited by Dana, Feb 7 2014, 04:17 PM.

As I sit here, I have my super mailbox key in my pocket! Its much the same as any padlock key! Locksmiths using picks are able to open most padlocks and given the right tools these locks could be picked. There is a tool that looks much like a pistol and its picks are pushed into the lock, the trigger is pulled which moves the tumblers and then the tool is revolved. Automobiles have thousands of duplicate locks because there is a limit on the number of lock combinations possible and its probably likely that this limitation applies to super boxes, also! Its conceivable that someone could have one of these pick tools (illegaly) but it may not be very productive, as it would be difficult to time when cheques arrive, and who may be receiving one as well. Usually these boxes are located in populous places, and it would be difficult to pilfer these without being noticed. Beyond a number on the door, there is no identification on the box, so to target the box of, lets say a pensioner, would be tricky! These boxes are already in use by the thousands, pilfering hasn't been a major problem anywhere. When the mail is delivered, the mail person opens up whole front of the box, not each and every private box. The master lock for the master door is of a different type of lock and is probably a unpickable lock! |

The story has an odor of untruthfulness attached. Those community boxes have been in use for years and this is the first story read about some idiots stealing from them. |

I agree. There is not likely anything in the common mail of value. The last thing I got of any value was free promo sample of baby formula. |

Banks send new credit cards by mail, the government insists on sending your new medicare card and your new driver's license by mail, the tax department insists on sending your code to get into your account on line. Think about how valuable this is to someone to steal your identity, heck the government sends your senior card, your social insurance card. Recently I got two cheques in the mail, one Canadian for $200 and one American for $100. |

Just because you never heard about it doesn't mean it didn't happen. I once drove by one near Bayfield and saw some boxes pried open. |

Here's a news story about thefts from boxes. From past experience, we are not always told!!! This one is about BC thefts.

The 8000 soon to be laid of postal workers and those whom they serve(d) will know how to vote come next election! That would add up to quite a few people now, wouldn't it. |

Presently, most residences have unlockable mail boxes, and in rural areas unlocked mail boxes at the side of the road. Now, all of a sudden, mail is to be delivered to a resonably safe place we are told of thousands of forced entry to these boxes. Here in the city I have all sorts of people coming to my box to deliver fliers, mail and whatever. There would be no problem for a thief to walk down the street behind the mailman and collect deliveries of interest. When I had a super mail box, I was able to go away for a few days and find my mail on my return. Now, I must arrange for someone clear my unlocked box for fear of my mail being taken. Banks are responsible for their new credit cards until the customer calls to confirm the receipt of same. Banks could send cards out by courier, but I assume it would be much more expensive and not cost effective. |

I have two family members employed by the post office. This may or maynot impact them. However, falling use of snail mail dictates that some employee's will lose their jobs. The use of super boxes is inevitable. To keep things the way they are, to save jobs is just another form of welfare. Welfare can be delivered more effectively in other ways! |
