I just finished watching the first season of Rectify. Has anyone watched this critically acclaimed show? I am very conflicted . There are some very touching moments but also some very disturbing and unfamiliar ones for me. The anguish is almost too much of a downer for me but the optimist in me will soldier on when it returns next month.

All I can add is that I have always liked J. Smith Cameron.

Until today, I had never heard of RECTIFY.
If SUNDANCE offers On-Demand I'll give the first couple episodes a shot.

Well I checked. Although I can get Sundance in low definition, both HD and On-Demand require a subscription. Not really interested because Sundance having added commercials is not of much interest to me anymore.

So no RECTIFY for me.

I looked it up and I think it's coming shortly.

Seems to have very good reviews

Bitsy,

Is it streaming (Watch Instantly) or must I do disc by disc?

Ohhh...lost a 5 paragraph post.

Short version:
We watched the first two of the six. Not bad, but the TIMES said the last 4 stink.
Quote:

But almost as soon as the second episode starts (also on Sunday night) the qualities of surprise and humanity seem to fade and the series takes a turn into gassiness and obscurity. The show’s creator and chief writer, the veteran character actor Ray McKinnon (he was the Rev. Smith in “Deadwood”), seems to have had just enough good ideas for a compelling pilot. After that the best he can do is combine some of the sentimental moral clichés of the big-budget prison picture with the feel-bad lassitude common to low-budget depictions of the American South.

My problem is with plot. Guy spends 19 years in prison for rape/murder and is exonerated by DNA evidence. Comes home to scorn and derision. HOW STUPID is this town?
Another guy shoots himself in the woods. Are they gonna test HIS DNA against the killer's semen?
I half expected the townsfolk to come running with torches and pitchforks: "Fire BAD."

The Senator is particularly annoying and 1/2 dimensional but I like the sister (she's Harvey's feisty girlfriend on SUITS.)

We'll watch the next 4 expecting little.
Bob likes it a lot more than I do. Deus Ex Machina doesn't bother him as much as it does me.

Not having a critic's eye, I saw little difference in the first two episodes and those following. Actually, the character's development helped me have a little better understanding of their relationships but it is so slow...the word one review used was plodding and I agree.

We'll have the 6 episodes done over the weekend and I am keeping an open mind.

Another question I had right away: "Why the fu*k did this guy go back to his home town" except maybe to drive the plot?
When I realized that my home town was narrow minded, dead-ended, homophobic, troglodytic and petrified of intelligent people, I had the sense to get out, and that was Eastern PA, not some godforsaken berg in the hills of VA (I think.)

This guy is in a worse place...he is in a town that wants him DEAD.
The lead is walking around in a zombie-haze. Maybe that is realistic but it's not cinematically interesting.

I like the discussion...sometimes more interesting to talk about what's wrong than what's right.
