Difference in grocery prices

This morning I shopped at Costco and then Loblaws. They are right across the street from one another. Here are some of the big differences I noticed on items I purchased at Costco.

Skippy peanut butter 2 kg. 6.79 at Costco and- 9.49 at Loblaws
white sugar 4 kg 3.49 at Costco and 5.49 at Loblaws
Cascade 115 ct 15.99 at Costco an 22.49 at Loblaws (would be $19.99 at Costco but there was $4.00 off

The huge difference is the 6 pack of organic chicken broth at Costco for $7.99 and at Loblaws they are sold singly at $2.99

Tide Pods were $23.99 for 90 at Costco, and I forgot to check at Loblaws but will on Wednesday when I take a recipe to one of the cashiers.

It is no wonder the parking lot is so full early on in the day at Costco with price difference like these. I only shop at Loblaws for the loss leaders for the most part with the exception of a loaf of rye bread which I love and few stores carry it.

Oh I do not use a lot of sugar, but am in baking mode the past few days.

It does not time to make up the cost of the membership at Costco.

Take care,
Pat

Are you sure you're not a Spokesperson for Costco? laugh123

Costco may be good if you need to be buying in bulk But for someone like me I don't need all the extras
All that peanut butter would last me a year..

Chicken broth I make from scratch...
Pretty much everything is packaged in two's or more that's way too much that even a small family can use I bought a bag of the pancake mix..... It had those teeny meele bugs you don't know how long some things sit on shelves or how often they are rotated.

I was looking for freezer bags I don't need 4 boxes of freezer bags Everything you buy is all supersized....

I shop at Freshco I find they have some excellent weekly bargains I found some cactus leaves I am going to try and make a cactus salad.... I love some of their other products as well too and prices..
I will say though that Costco did have great chicken breasts in bulk they were large and the price reasonable But i haven't been for quite some time. Likely gone up in price as everything else too....One person shopping IMO not practical.....

When I make my grocery list I compare all the flyers I get on line I don't jump from place to place because I don't drive but I will compare. I have a couple of sites that I can download coupons. Yesterday I printed a $3.00 off at Bulk Barn another $2.00 for Purina Cat Chow for Lucy. I used to shop at Zehrs no longer I wanted to buy cranberry juice the Ocean Spray reg bottle was $4.49 crazy I went to Walmart the same brand was $2.79 even Zehrs generic Brand was expensive $3.49 a dollar less but still I won't pay... The only thing I have from Zehrs is my Pharmacy they don't charge extra they deliver in a timely manner and I have developed a relationship with them over the years They will contact me to remind me I have not re ordered things..

The peanut butter is for my friends who feed all the cats. i buy a lot of stuff for them.

Must say I have never bought anything with bugs in it from Costco as their turnover is so fast, and they delist products that do not move.

I have often said when I die someone will benefit from the contents of my storage room .... not perishable goods but items like those freezer bags, facial and bathroom tissue and so on. I make many many soups so the organic broth works for me in some cases. In fact just yesterday I made one pot pasta which was delish, and I used some in it. The fish and sweet potato dog food I buy (Kirkland brand) is half the price of what I used to pay and works so much better for Montana's system.

Yes, you are right though Alli inasmuch as I could be a spokesperson for Costco. I have so very many of the $10 tshirts that are made in Canada, and have never had one pill, and only one shrunk, but I think it was not made to size to begin with. I watched Made in Bangladesh yesterday which featured the building that collapsed and killed so many. Those poor people make a pittance, and yet those tshirts cost way more than the Made in Canada ones from Costco. I like the yoga pants from Costco as much as the Lu Lu Lemons which cost many times more.

One regret is I did not purchase Fila sneakers that were featured about a month ago for $16.95. I thought that was just too cheap for shoes to wear walking each morning. However, the chap I walk with bought them and said they feel like wearing slippers and wears them every morning on our walks. I went back to buy some, but alas, they were one of those sale items that only lasted a couple of weeks. If you see something you like, you better grab it as it likely will not be there on your next visit.

For the most part I do not purchase much fresh produce there as the quantities are too much for me, but I do buy the large bag of spinach almost weekly, and pay a little more for celery that is already cut as I have a habit of just leaving it.

Yes, their prices are inching up too, but from the comparison with Loblaws, they are still much cheaper. However, if I did not live where I do, I would not have a storage room with lots of shelving.

Take care,
Pat

When things are on sale, I buy several eg. sugar at $1.48 last week when I happened to be in Can. Tire. Peanut butter is often on sale for about $3 for the medium sized jar at various stores. Shoppers Drug Mart had butter at $2.99 last week so I bought a couple for the freezer. Clark's beans were 67 cents this week and I bought 3. I hardly ever pay full price and it wouldn't pay me to shop at Costco since I don't use things up fast enough. I check the flyers every week and pick up specials.

Just the difference in the price of Montana's dog food (which my vet agrees is an excellent food) pays for my membership more than 5 times.

I do like Freshco as well. Carrots 3# Superstore = 2.48, Freshco $1.69, same brand. Similarly for potatoes and onions. I find the quality of food at Freshco to be excellent

My daughter in Montreal shops at Costco once a month and shares with my granddaughter. Here I would be inundated with stuff but I think I have found a share person recently, we are going to Costco together soon. I pay nothing for the card as my daughter gives it to me.

I basically shop as Haili shops. I saw a roast for $53 yesterday and thought of Delphi's post. Two K of sugar lasts me about a year if I don't do baking much. I do need some to make my bread pudding, bought white bread by mistake and have some light cream that I bought when my Mennonite friends came to visit. Have to use the rest up somehow.

We get our prescriptions from Costco and the savings in dispensing fees ($4.50 at Costco as oppose to $11.00 at Safeway) covers the membership fees. Soon I will get a hearing aid which is much less than other places.

I love the super sizes of toilet paper, dishwashing/laundry supplies, cleaning supplies and dog food/dog treats.

The savings at Costco are quite significant and the membership fee is quickly made up. By using their American Express card, I get enough back each year to more than cover the membership fees.

I still use Sobeys for much of my shopping but save on dishwashing detergent, toilet paper, produce, and many other items at Costco. They have just started carrying a quality cat kibble under their Kirkland brand which is a huge saving. .
I've become quite fond of the Kirkland black bean soup sold in tetra packs in groups of 6, I believe. Each tetra is enough for 2 days. Tassimo coffee is also sold at a huge saving.

Must look for that soup OO as I fill up my small freezer when I make so many soups and freeze them. Guess I was meant to go back as they had the glucosamine & chondrroitin which is usually $26.99 with $6.00 off. Montana and I both take it twice/day. She is the first Golden Retriever I have had that has not developed arthritis and hip dysplasia. Some likely think it does zip, but I think it helps.

Another thing I really like about Costco is they take items back, and do not even want a reason. I had bought a hoody on Monday. Took the tags off this morning and decided I had better try it on, and darned if I could get the zipper up. Doesn't make sense since it was up when I bought it. Took it back, and being me, I was nattering away about why I was returning it, and the clerk did not even want to hear it.

Take care,
Pat

We also have the American Express COSTCO membership, and shop there regularly, especially for paper products.

Pat, I laughed at your statement about your store room, because ours in the same.

However, I have had to return several items because of spoilage.

That is another great thing about Costco. Sierra (dog) is so picky about her food and treats and I have returned opened bags with no questions asked.

During one of the returns, I asked the clerk what they do with the opened bags (thinking they are donated to a "pet food bank". Not so, it is returned to the manufacturer. That is my only complaint on Costco.

Erka. I need to visit a Canadian Costco when I visit you to buy my Voltaren. Is there one near your house?

BJ: Richmond Costco is on the way to the US border. It is not the closest (downtown costco is) but the parking is free at Richmond.

We just let the COSTCO membership expire. We found that we couldn't make back the membership fee.
So we just got a 60 day free memberbership offer at BJ's...we are going to do it although both are quite a subway haul away (One in the Bronx, one in Queens.)

In Jersey City we were BJ members for at least 10 years because the place was in our neighborhood. I was SHOCKED to find I could get 4 tires for only $100.

First BJ's purchase will be tomorrow...$89 for a fully articulated tilt and swivel mount for the TV up on the wall. Same thing is $129 at COSTCO. And some Michael Angelo Chicken Piccata's...COSTCO didn't carry them.
