Huge Ant Hill

Today I was raking and looks like there's a huge colony of ants in this one area. I read that they don't like coffee so I spooned a bunch of old instant that I had in the cupboard onto them and wet the area. They are coming up from cracks in the ground. They are not happy!

Last year I mowed around a smaller ant hill but now it looks like an ant dynasty. I just hope they don't find a way into my house. A few are helpful for pollination, etc. but not this many. Does anyone use borax?

Ours are just regular ants. At the first sign of them I sprayed them with a soap, vinegar and/or peppermint spray. They haven't come back yet, but I expect they will. I have also laid down borax mixed with icing sugar. It is said that they carry it back to their nests, everyone has a feast, then they are dead! It is really quite a shame as they are such diligent workers, but I just wish they would go somewhere else than in my yard and flower beds.

They are black in colour and larger than the red ants. The coffee seems to have really stopped any activity but I'll check tomorrow.
I think in small numbers they are helpful to a garden but this morning, there were so many and they seem to be living in a crack in the ground. They were just pouring out .
Will try the peppermint, etc. and see what happens.

I've had the tiny black ants in my washroom for a week now and am using ant traps. They work but it takes awhile, usually about 3 days. There are still a few stragglers. I think I might have to put a fresh one down. I also used the ones with the borax and sugar in the garage.
