Going to see a concert performance of Roberto Devereaux (Donizetti) tonight at Carnegie Hall.
Elizabeth kills Essex yet again. :ChickenDance:

Elizabeth will be sung by Mariella Devia (don't know her.) Stephen Costello will sing Essex.

You will not be disappointed she has a marvelous voice.....
She is in her 60's but has not lost any of the beauty of her voice... An amazing Lyric soprano. I heard her sing Norma on a CD - just beautiful She didn't struggle every note seemed unaffected by age..
She has been known to have played Lucia, in Lucia di Lammermoor several times through out her wonderful career....

but here...

She was really good, her tenor was better (Robert Costello...you're gonna hear from him.)
Davia's coloratura is still dazzling bel canto but her low notes, Elizabeth has a lot of almost recitative, don't project well. Understandable and forgiveable for her age, 66 and lyric tessitura. She may have skipped a couple of finale highest notes but I'm not that familiar with Devereaux to be sure.
She made her debut in 1973 with Lucia, and with Opera Orchestra of New York in 1981 with LAKME' so she goes back a ways.
The Sarah was very good and Nottingham was terrific.

It's a very good opera and in my mind I heard Beverly Sills singing it. My first Opera was Beverly singing MARIA STUARDA at State Theater when she was in full vocal bloom...1974.

Davia took me back to "the old days" in that she had an immense claque up in the peanut gallery with her who went NUTS with her every major aria. (We were second row orchestra, called Parquet for some reason at Carnegie Hall.) But looking back and UP at the screaming hoard was a hoot.

Oops,
yes, I mean Stephen Costello.

He's lost quite a bit of weight and looks younger and fitter than that picture.
Such a gorgeous strong voice and at 33 he has a lot of time ahead of him.
