High Cost of Potatoes!

Today I had to stop at Zehrs to pick up a prescription. While I was there I would get a bag of potatoes as I have a BBQ tomorrow... I'd make potatoe salad. Not going to happen....

I was stunned to see the ridiculous cost of potatoes. $7.98 for a 10lb bag. 5 lbs were at $5.98..I was shocked to say the least! I spoke to the produce manager asked him what the deal was, his response these were new crop the peek potatoe and I asked if he really believed what he just said. He admitted he didn't know why they were so high. Onions peppers.... Yes there are other cheaper stores around and I normally go to Freshco but not everyone can go to the lesser costing stores due to transportation costs or issues...

I am sure we are going to see a lot of things highly inflated in the next coming weeks....with various reasons why.....

We cashed in some Air Miles for Safeway coupons, got $110 worth. I hate Sobeys / Safeway and we never shop there, but there isn't a lot of choice with Airmiles coupons and I hate Shell gas even more. That being said, yesterday I decided to try out $30 of the coupons at our local Safeway. We needed potatoes, so my orders were to come back with a few "new white" ones. I was aghast to see they were $1.99 a lb, just about had the big one when I saw the price. To keep the boss happy, I bought 4 potatoes, came to $3.35 and we had them tonight, they were good but didn't taste much like gold. The rest of the $30 were taken up with about 5 other items that are almost twice the price than other places. (Did I mention how much I dislike Safeway ?)

Wow! I seldom buy potatoes as I prefer brown rice, but in the summer I do like potato salad. Not at that price though!!

Has it been a wet spring or growing season? You'll always be paying more for a peak crop though. We paid NZ$3.99/3 kg for new potatoes yesterday which would be approx CAN$3.73 and 3 kgs = approx 6½lb.

I read the other day that Sobeys are closing 50 under producing stores...

At the apartment complex I live there is free bus service on Wed to shop at Sobeys. Not a lot of good specials I have the Club Sobey but probably not much on it...

I don't like Sobeys I find them also expensive..

I remember living in Bowmanville loading up my kidlets in the car driving to Pickering to Knob Hill Farms... Now there you were always getting a lot of good buys...

I agree that Sobey's is expensive, I seldom shop there unless I happen to be in that part of the city and need to pick something up. I'm a Freshco fan.

I find Sobey and Metro the two most expensive stores. I bought some potatoes, small white, and small red, they cost me all of $7.96. This was for potato salad. I seldom eat them, but I have noticed that the price of rice is up as well.

Forget beef, it is out of my league.

Potatoes are NUTS. They have cycled wildly in price over the last 3 decades. Just when I think I'll never buy another, the price drops back to $1.49 (on sale, natch) for 5 pounds of "Eastern Potatoes."

If the price stays high, on almost ANYTHING, I find a substitute. With the gazillion food choices we have, there is no need to become trapped into anything because of habit. If the price of all foods soar, I'll finally be able to stick to a successful diet.

Too bad you do not live close by Alli. Two weeks ago I purchased 10 lbs. of red skin potatoes for $5.99 at Loblaws. Ordinarily, I would not buy a bag, but the loose red skin were $1.49/lb. and I swear most of them must have weighed close to a pound. Fortunately, my closet is cool year round so I have no problem keeping them for some time. Just now put a pot on, and I'll make potato salad and keep some to fry.

Take care,
Pat

I think what is happening is that they are trying to make potatoes a gourmet item rather than a staple. The potato was once a lowly food that people would fill up on with a skimpy amount of meat. .

Sobeys is now selling separate bags of potatoes for mashing, for baking, etc. The bags are small and rather pricey, meant for people who seldom cook , I suppose. Then there are fingerlings, all sorts of colored little potatoes, etc. I buy quite a large bag of the little ones mixed red and brown for a fair price at Costco. . I love the fingerlings for special dinners.

I did find some lovely large red new potatoes yesterday @.69 cents a lb. at Superstore. Not super cheap, but for new potatoes it wasn't a bad price. I like to bake them.
It must be hard to feed a family these days as prices on everything have soared. Apples at over 2.00 a lb. just seems wrong.

One more reason we shop in Bellingham, WA. Three weeks ago we bought 10 lbs. russet potatoes (not new) for $1.98 and they aren't full of black spots like the last few bags of Canadian ones we've bought here! We did splurge last Thursday on a small bag of new white potatoes at $2.00 that was just under 2 lbs.

Potatoes are expensive every June because they aren't in season here yet. I only buy a few new ones at a time. The old ones were picked last Oct. and kept in storage. This is the time of year when I eat more pasta, rice or buns instead. We should be getting local ones or cheaper imported ones in a month or so. I think the new ones were about $1.29 a pound at Food Basics.

Lillal - let us know when you are going to Bellingham. We could meet for lunch!

I wish those of you who need potatoes lived close by. 3 years ago, I decided to plant assorted fingerling potatoes as they are very easy to grow. Too easy. Each year, I think I have dug them all up and the next year, I have huge quantities of new fingerling potatoes, and as DH and I try to keep to a low carb life style, we end up giving them all away.

I do use some when son visits and send some home with him.

If anyone has a balcony that gets some sunlight, potatoes are easy to grow in a large pot.

Despite it being a bit late I plan to plant some potatoes in pots, so nice to just duck outside to dig up a few for dinner. I will have to wait a couple of months but well worth it.
