Today I had to stop at Zehrs to pick up a prescription. While I was there I would get a bag of potatoes as I have a BBQ tomorrow... I'd make potatoe salad. Not going to happen.... I was stunned to see the ridiculous cost of potatoes. $7.98 for a 10lb bag. 5 lbs were at $5.98..I was shocked to say the least! I spoke to the produce manager asked him what the deal was, his response these were new crop the peek potatoe and I asked if he really believed what he just said. He admitted he didn't know why they were so high. Onions peppers.... Yes there are other cheaper stores around and I normally go to Freshco but not everyone can go to the lesser costing stores due to transportation costs or issues... I am sure we are going to see a lot of things highly inflated in the next coming weeks....with various reasons why..... |

Anyone go to green grocers? I bought some local babynew potatoes @ 79 cents/pound which I thought was a good price for local produce. After seeing Durgan's post on sweet potato slips, I started some sweet potatoes in water in March. This week the slips were planted into 3 hugh containers. We will see how successful this experiment will be. |

Potatoes do fluctuate in price a lot. The foodstuff that infuriated me today was salmon. We stopped at Loblaws today to get some for dinner. Thieving bastards had atlantic salmon priced at $18.99 a pound. Went to the Chinese supermarket instead, where they had much better sushi grade salmon for $7.99. |

Good grief, Heat. Here, For $18.99 or less you can buy fresh wild Alaska salmon, whichever is running. |

Heck, I bought thin sliced smoked salmon at Jacks on Friday: $2.99/4 ounces or 11.96/pound. Fresh salmon over $7? I let it swim. The only way to force prices down is to stop buying it. |

Loblaws prices are so high on most items. While it is the closest grocery store, I mostly only buy 'specials'. None of the cashiers I have come to know shop there. More and more I do not know how those with limited income manage these days. Take care, Pat |

I saw nice fresh salmon filets at one of our mid-priced markets yesterday: $8.99/pound. (Of course I also saw it at Whole Foods for $22.99.) You've gotta be a shopper unless you are rich. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 2 2014, 12:21 AM.

Loblaws as I said above, are thieves. Until the other day I had never seen any place try to sell farmed salmon for that price. Toronto is awash with all kinds of salmon, and rarely is it more than about eight or nine bucks a pound, often much less. But this is consistent with their other pricing practices. |

Saw 10 lbs of new white potatoes for $3.49 at Freshco yesterday. Did not buy them as I usually eat maybe 1 or 2 a month on a good month. |

Yeah, That's a good price but not if you have to throw out 7 pounds next month. I used to make several gallons of potato/leek (onion) soup and freeze it in quarts...but cannot do that anymore with a 15 cu foot fridge/freezer. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 2 2014, 02:05 AM.

Yesterday I paid $1.06 for bananas! What is going on? I only bought two, hoping it is just temporary........but? I thought maybe it was because the supply trucks couldn't come in because of flooding around here and being short on supplies. |

Bananas are always 77 or 87 cents here. A few years ago they were much less. However, Costco sells a large bag (approx. l0 bananas) for l.59. Useful if you are making banana bread.

I purchased 10 lbs. of potatoes for 3.89 yesterday at the Italian store, this is the good news. I bought black forest ham which was 19.00 per kg! It was excellent ham though, much superior to the grocery deli. |

One would hope that the grocers wouldn't try to cash in on the emergency situation! |
