I subscribe to a website called FreeePreview that lists all upcoming freebie weekends for Cable companies. THey send out a mailing alert when a new offering pops up usually a couple weeks in advance. So I visited the site last week...nothing for me. Then Sunday evening while channel surfing: THE NORMAL HEART on HBO...so we watched it again, terrific the second time. Seems that FIOS offered free prime channels from Friday through Monday and I went to the FreePreview website and yes, Free HBO, Cinemax, Showtime, The Movie Channel, Epic and Starz. But they only put the posting up Friday and sent out no mailings, probably because they realized how late they were. So Sunday night began a crash course in a half season of VEEP, TRUE BLOOD catchup and the first of their new series THE LEFTOVERS. We both enjoyed it and look forward to another freebie weekend. I now plan on checking every Friday afternoon. Did anyone else see it? Did you like it? (One of the reviews called it HBO's "feel good series of the Summer, if your Summer revolves around root-canals and waterboarding." :snowflake: ) Edited by Trotsky, Jul 4 2014, 01:25 AM.

I saw adverts for The Leftovers and it looked interesting. But, we forgot to tape it. We'll try to remember this week. |

I watched The Leftovers and enjoyed it. I wondered how it was for someone who hasn't read the book. It could have been quite perplexing. Justin Theroux could qualify for the hottest Dad ever! I like how it turns the Rapture myth on its head. Nice touch that both the Pope and Jerry Busey are taken! |

I hope cutie in the water isn't dead. I guess he gets his good looks from "hot dad" and I'd like to see more of both. So Olive, you see it as reverse rapture? Where the bastards are taken away. But then why toddlers? (I guess I might be making the wild assumption that religious beliefs ever make sense. biggrin 04 biggrin 04 ) Do you think Theroux's tattoos are real? I see it as sort of a muddying of the waters. Take away some of the innocent as well as some d--- bags. . Then of course, make a new religion based on the missing. And make these people smoking stalkers. Crazy fun. I was wondering about the tats as well. Not what you expect for a Dad role. I thought Theroux was the son of Paul Theroux the travel writer but I think I read somewhere he is a nephew. Bit of a family resemblance going on. |

Paul Theroux isn't just a travel writer. He is also the author of some pretty amazing novels, one of which was made into a movie starring River Phoenix. Its called Mosquito Coast. Very interesting as a novel and also as a film. |

I liked Mosquito coast but most of his novels leave me cold. His travel writings, although he comes across snotty and ornery at times, is fascinating. Perhaps I should give them another try. |

I'm thinking it is most similar to UNDER THE DOME. (Are those cute twins the ones from DESPERATE HOUSEWIVES?) So now onto two recorded episodes of THE LOST SHIP. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 5 2014, 04:29 AM.

I was wracking my brain as to why Paul Theroux was a name I recognized - I am dreadful with remembering names regardless who it is - until the travel writer bit was mentioned. I had recently read Riding the Iron Rooster. Interesting read after nearly 20 years since he wrote it. I was a bit put off by some of what he said about fellow passengers then decided that was unfair considering I would most likely do the same whether in a positive or negative light if it fit in with what I wanted to write/say about an event. |

How do we feel about THE WALKING DEAD, of the same genre. I feel it's pretty good (but without my TV I'm also walking dead.) They started over with a marathon yesterday and I watched til I was bleary. Good stuff. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 6 2014, 12:03 AM.

I liked Under the Dome and The Walking Dead at first. By the beginning of the second season I was bored with both of them. It seems that they always start out with an interesting premise and then drive it into the ground or let it get into the realm of slapstick like True Blood has. Very few shows engage my attention for a full series. I loved Deadwood and devoured every episode and I feel the same about Shameless. I also enjoy a Canadian production called Rookie Blue. |
