My kids are so disappointed that I don't watch Walking Dead. I tried twice and both times, I had such a sense of dread. The first time, there was a girl dead with her eyes open and her Mom was bending over her and they were waiting to kill her as she was a zombie. Then there was a recent episode that my son had on when he visited where they were going through a house where a family once lived. The buildup in tension was unbearable. I think if I had someone to watch this with, I might it. It just all seems so hopelessly sad and horrid. The kids rate it and Breaking Bad as two of the best series ever. |

I certainly agree with Breaking Bad anyway. |

Of the bunch, I really feel that WALKING DEAD is the winner. Over all these many years, 51 hours so far, they have worked in so many human sub-plots that makes it always heartfelt. My most stirring moment was when the "leader" and the "newbie" were bonding on the trailer roof whacking golf balls and the alpha mail nailed the other poor soul in the head and dragged him into the pit to be eaten by the walkers. It was awful and horrible...but real, and that is the kind of stuff that makes great TV literature...and History. That is the kind of stuff that had sons kill their fathers to rule the realm. It's only the stuff that scares you, that makes you think about it afterward, that makes you remember, that is the GOOD stuff, the stuff worth watching. WALKING DEAD will become a cult BIG TIME because it really defines human emotions under impossible stress. Anyone remember the one about the two sisters, one of whom insisted the WD were real people who could be played with, and for her psychotic generosity had to be basically PUT DOWN? That's EPIC tragedy like Aeschylus. (oops, now I'm beginning to sound pompous. oooh 02 ) Edited by Trotsky, Jul 6 2014, 06:30 AM.

My son seems to be haunted by a recent episode where a little girl was evil (not sure if she was turned) and they had to shoot her. You don't usually see kids hurt on the screen. |

That's the one, Olive. The twist was that her evil was that she befriended the zombies including one who was only a torso, and played with them while staying one step ahead of being bitten. Her compassion resulted in her sister being killed and her mother, or surrogate mother, shot her for the good of the group. They had tried everything they could to convince the girl that these were no longer people but she would not be convinced. Edited by Trotsky, Jul 6 2014, 11:41 PM.

It was a haunting episode, indeed. The child was intelligent, thoughtful, generous, kind...but ultimately , and probably sensibly, disposable.
