Life of a mattress

Yesterday morning I turned my mattress, and while doing so read the label which said it was guaranteed for 10 years. Mine is now 18 years old. Unless I am looking through rose coloured glasses, it looks as good as the day we bought it. I turn it regularly and now have a topper on it. I sleep on the left side right on the edge, and am surprised I have never fallen off. Only 10 lb. Harley and 60+ lb. Montana have slept in the centre of the mattress.

My granddaughter's long time boyfriend has worked at a mattress company in Customer Service while looking for a job in his chosen field of publishing, and I asked him how long a mattress should last. He said "Today 10 years." Suppose that means (like so many things) they are not made to last.

Does anyone else have a mattress that is 18 years old and still looks and feels like new?

Take care,
Pat

Mine is 25 years old and still looks like new. Like you I have a memory foam topper. I cannot turn it though.

I figure it should last this long as it is an electric bed mattress that cost me plus $3,000.00 in 1989.

The best purchase I ever made because it permits me to change my sleeping pressure points by moving the slant of the bed.

It was purchased by prescription from an orthopedic specialist and he also told me the company to get it from, consequently no tax.

I don't remember what the name of the company was, I do remember going into the factory where they were made in Montreal, even got to pick the fabric and saw the internal construction it would have.

Beautyrest Extra Long Twin set, verypricey at MACY'S...bought in 1981 looks fine.
So that's 33 years.

Bought it for me (6'2") but it's way too firm for my back but Bob likes it. Only problem has been the difficulty of finding extra-long fitted sheets.

And there I thought mine was old. Sheesh ...... it is just a youngster and should be around as long as I am. Cannot recall what we paid for it.

Take care,
Pat

Didn't Hume Cronin and Jessica Tandy star in a two handed that had a title similar to the topic title?

Mine is queen size and just a hunk of foam. It must be at least 15-20 years old. Like GG, I sleep on the edge of it for some reason. I think of replacing it but it's too confusing with all the choices out there. I still have my waterbed frame so that would have to be changed to support a new bed. I never turn it .
The only thing I'm sure of is that I wouldn't want one of those real high beds.

I do hope all these mattresses get vacuumed on a regular basis! Even with a mattress cover, which do need washing, there is going to be accumulated waste over the years. I now want to strip my relatively new bed down after having just changed the sheets because I have not vacuumed it recently.

Blizzard, I have 3 covers, one on the mattress, one on the topper and another over both. They do get washed regularly. The mattress does get vacuumed and having done it with a clean bag-less machine nothing is every in there. I figure with 3 covers and a topper it is difficult for anything to find its way there.

Aha ..... Forgot to say I did vacuum mine yesterday, but it was the first time in a while - perhaps too long a while. oooh 02

I'm looking for a good price on a nice quilted topper for my mattress (a full size.) The one that's on is disgustingly yellowed...must be 1/2 pound of old skin. Bob changes the sheets so I haven't seen it for a while...'til this week. Yeccch.

I thought of washing it, but I think it might fall apart. On the other hand, what's to lose?

I used to have a cheap foam mattress that was SO good for my back but I was finding progressively larger amounts of foam dust around the bed as it slowly decomposed.
I hated to throw it out knowing I would never again find something so back friendly.

I guess I did sound rather shocked but that was most likely due to seeing some horror mattresses when working in homes with staff I managed several years ago. Three covers, that sounds like enough. When I bought a new bed for my youngest I insisted she get a cover and pillow covers because she was moving to an older apartment building where the apartment could have done with a much better cleaning than had been done.
