I've never had good luck growing them (northern shady exposure) with only l or 2 out of 5 purchased coming up. However, this year one of them has really come to life and even has a few babies! The one is huge and beautiful. Is there a way to encourage ferns to grow? I'm keeping them damp. I'd really like them to really spread.. I know they spread underground but can pieces be put in water and rooted? |

I have Japanese painted ferns growing in deep shade and they're just now starting to spread. It seems that they spread from underground roots. My neighbour top dressed that flower bed and I think they're planted too deep now. They still do well but are much later to fill out this year. |

There was one dark damp area of my parents house where they flourished. Every time I tried to transplant them to anywhere else, they died quickly. Seems they will grow where they wish but, like a cat, will not abide by our wishes, |

NZ's Fujiama ... from different angles. It's a dangerous mountain to climb, because it's right on the coast and the weather can change in the blink of an eye, and the climber's in a whole heap of trouble. It's the one that cured me of my mountaineering aspirations after a nearly 200 m slide! Posted Image Posted Image Posted Image |

Driving the back country roads this weekend we saw a beautiful ferns along the roads. Usually by this time of year they are turning brown. This is an English summer for us cool and wet. Other plants that seem so happy are geraniums, hostas, lilies of all kinds and now the many different colours of phlox. Ferns grow around my foundation pretty well. |

My clematis have never lasted as long as they have this summer. They started in June and I still have a few pink blooms on one of them. The cone flowers are looking good now too. |

I have often thought of purchasing azealeas but worry that they would not grow. They are so expensive. I love the ones that change colour in the Fall. I think you add something to the soil. |
