Just a reminder that school speed limit zones are in effect again. A policeman kindly left me with a $110 reminder today. Doing 47 in a 30 zone. A four lane major street through our nearest city of 60 000 with heavy traffic. I didn't realize there was a school on a side street and had little chance to see the sign being in the left lane with cars between me and signs on the right, all of us going the same speed. The policeman with radar catching one per cent of the offenders seems a poor way of looking after these school areas. There ought to be some continuing reminder for those of us who happen to miss the sign. A red curb or paint line would do it. Blinking lights every 50 meters, maybe. I think one of those signs flashing your speed - followed by a photo radar set catching everybody who ignores the warning would work well. The problem is half of us don't see the little sign and many more know their chances of getting caught are low. I seem to get a speeding ticket about every ten years and DW catches me speeding in a school zone at least once a year. Time to buy a newer GPS unit with speeding alarm. Anyone know if they are aware of school zones? I went to the courthouse to pay the fine, the only way to avoid further charges for handling fees. I had to empty my pockets and go through a metal detector just like airport security. I thanked my good luck that I was there to pay a small fine instead of for hitting a child. |

Delphi, I have been caught between the Australian States as they all have different starts to their holidays, and Christmas is the worst as I am usually travelling through three states. My state requires 25 kph whenever a child is in the pedestrian zone of a school 24/7 and all year around. Other states just require the speed in school terms and usually 8.00 am to 9.30 am and 2.30 pm to 4.00pm. The schools have signs similar to Kahu's and a zig zag on the road at beginning and end of the zone. |

A little off topic here, could not help but notice your sign, you mean cell and texting is permitted in Texas apart from school zones? |

No, quite the contrary. I thought it was clearly stated on the sign. |

It says: "No texting or hand held phone use in active school zone". If it is illegal everywhere why do they put that sign up, to me it implies that it is not legal in an active school zone thus legal in other areas. That is why I asked. |

I was just saying to my D, who does not drive, that I have no idea what is expected in school zones during the teachers' strike in BC. I chose to slow down as it is important to keep the practise up and there were teachers picketing. |
