I know several of you have been to the Cancun area, Mayan Riveria, etc. I am thinking of booking a trip this winter, however have very limited knowledge of the area. I'd appreciate any info regarding preferred areas, hotels etc, and of course safety issues.

We've been to P.V. several times but never to the Yucatan peninsula.

Thanks,

Mau

Downtown playa del Carmen is quite pleasant. Boutique hotels and a zillion restaurants in all price ranges.

Don't know about the resorts outside of town.

What I seen of the Yucatan wasn't very scenic! There are Incan ruins that are interesting to see. If you like bars, restaurants and shopping, along with laying out on the beach, Playa del Carmen is the place.
I have no plans for a return visit, as there are other places that i would like to see. However, I'm glad to have visited there!

My first trip to Cancun was in January, 2005, and Hurricane Wilma occurred in October, 2004 so there was still much devastation. We stayed at Dreams Resort which is the only time I have stayed at an all inclusive. We thought it was great, and because there was a large convention going on, we were upgraded to accommodation in the tower, and there was a smaller pool intended for just those guests.
As I recall, that year we went on the Captain Hook Dinner Cruise which was a lot of fun. We also went to Tulum and visited the Mayan Ruins. At Xel-Ha we went down the Lazy River in an inner tube. Cannot say it was my favourite excursion as I rubbed the inside of my arms raw paddling. We had to purchase a "biodegradable" sunscreen to protect the environment.
We did not go on tours, but hired a taxi which was some distance.
We went back in 2006 and stayed at CasaMagna Marriott Cancun Resort which was not inclusive. We went to Cozumel Island for shopping and eats, and now that I think of it, we had been there the previous year as well. We did the same restaurants. And we did the chain restaurants because my granddaughter and her friend were with us. At Margaritaville the girls including my daughters were up on the table dancing. Bubba Gump was another.

In 2011 we stayed again at CasaMagna Marriot Cancun Resort again, and no longer felt we had to do all the touristy spots.

We went back again in 2012 without the young folk, and because my daughter travels so much and amasses Marriott points, we stayed at the J.W. Marriott and had fantastic accommodations for 3 of us. I have written about 2013 where we did not get the same floor which is the top floor where Club 91 is situated. Club 91 is a private dining room with 5 exclusive food presentations daily and an open bar from 6-10. The first year we did not take advantage of dinner there, but in 2013 following chemo/surgery/radiation, Kim was not in condition to be out and about so it worked great for us. Plus we were relocated that year to the Presidentlal Suite which was over the top fantastic. We were back again this year, but are not traveling in January, 2015 since Kim is having surgery the first week in February.

I cannot recall whether we went to La Isla or Kukulcan malls for shopping. We walked there and back again - approx. half an hour from J.W. Marriott but took a taxi back this year as I had worn the skin off my baby toes and had to wear slippers in the hotel.

All in all, I love Cancun, and have never worried about safety. Have walked a long way on the beach by myself. I hope I get to go back again. Have been many other places, but still enjoy it.

Take care,
Pat

Thank you all for the info. We have 5 weeks of timeshare. I have just started to look for exchanges which is difficult at this late date. I usually start in July, however due to our son's health we didn't know if a holiday was going to be possible. Mexico is one of the destinations that seems to still have availability. My husband of course, has researched the stats on crime, therefore I have some convincing to do! I however, am yearning for " the sun and sand" after an absence of five years!

Thanks again ~ appreciate.
