Civeo to 'redomicile' in Canada after discovering tax advantage

Stock dives 45% on news it will not become a REIT

Civeo Corp., a Houston-based company that provides workplace accommodations in the Alberta oilsands, plans to move its headquarters to Canada after discovering it will gain a tax advantage.

The company had considered becoming a Real Estate Investment Trust in the U.S., but rejected that option because it can expect a tax rate of approximately 25-26 per cent in Canada, about four to five percentage points lower than the expected rate under the REIT structure.

OK is this how it works.

Say you are friends with the US, then make sure your corporate taxes are so low that you raid their companies. (My this does sound familiar does it not).

You also pretend you are a good guy to your own taxpayers by having a company come here and pretend it will make jobs.

BUT they will get a bunch of lowly paid foreign workers and this will count as making jobs for Canadians in the Conservative Accounting Procedures.

Not as smart as they thing they are - most of us are onto them.

Companies don't necessarily deserve vilification for seeking a more favourable tax rate.

But if that is the only reason for moving HQ and operations, you really have to wonder about the quality of leadership. There are a lot of other issues and responsibilities that owners and manages should be addressing.
