Virus that can cause polio-like paralysis on the rise in Canada

Amid the barrage of chilling news about Ebola and its toll, another virus attracted relatively little attention recently as it coughed and sneezed its way into Canadian lives.

Enterovirus D68, however, is finally getting its moment in the spotlight. Being likened to polio will do that.

Public health officials had warned doctors earlier this fall to be on the lookout for EV-D68, a cold-like bug that was showing up in unusual numbers and causing serious respiratory complications for a small minority of young patients, some of whom have wound up on breathing machines.

Then in the past few days, hospitals began reporting an even more alarming symptom. A number of patients, some but not all of whom have actually tested positive for the virus, were experiencing polio-like paralysis or weakness in one of their limbs.

Hospitals in Toronto and Hamilton, Ont., Edmonton, Calgary and Vancouver have all reported such cases in the past two to three days.

Yes, as a grandparent this scares me more than does Ebola.

Now that is worrying! I've been feeling a bit down over the death of a young 5yr old boy who got swept out to sea by a rogue wave out of a calm sea up in Tauranga ... with grandsons at that age!

A sweet little boy in black has captured the hearts of the toughest men in black.

Five-year-old Jack Dixon remains missing since a rogue wave snatched him from Mt Maunganui Beach and tossed him into the swirling surf on Wednesday. Searchers yesterday battled gale force winds, rain and hail. The search was set to resume this morning.

More than 12,000km away away the world champion team Jack idolised was preparing to battle arch-rivals the Springboks in Johannesburg.

I know how you feel, we lost a little fellow several weeks ago when he inadvertently fell into the river above the dam. He went over it and down over the rocks at the chute. His body was found a day and ahalf later below the dam in the large pool there. It was pretty horrible for the small village.

Once, I was told about a 7 year old boy who was snatched by a wave and taken out to sea on the west coast of this island. The family was visiting from Alberta. Long ago now but something one does not forget.

I heard another story, on CBC radio, told by a woman who survived a huge wave that washed into shore and lifted the big logs she was standing on only to be rolled underneath them and pounded by the logs which crushed some of her bones. Somehow she survived and lived to tell the horrifying tale.

Hearing stories like those gives one much more respect for the power of the ocean even when it seems mild. The waters are much calmer here on the east coast of this island than on the west where they are holding the 5th annual women's surfboarding competition - Queen of the Peak- this weekend.

Enterovirus is very scary. I have a beautiful grand daughter whose other grandmother who died this year. She was a lovely person and gorgeous but had post polio syndrome which caused a lot of pain and disability. It would be dreadful if GD got something similar .

I have read that the enterovirus is causing problems for those with asthma the most.

Didn't know this and I have a good case of allergy induced asthma.

How would one know if you had this? I never get fevers and if my asthma gets worse it is usually because of an allergen I have come in contact with. I do have emergency medication for that but would never know if I had this.

So far it is only affecting children under 15. They are thought not to have ever been exposed to things that make the rest of us immune.

Relax,
The CDC head will soon rule that is absolutely IMPOSSIBLE for this virus to be transmitted from person to person.
Can't happen...same with Ebola and Marburg.
Polio? There was no such thing.

With the CDC at the helm, diseases are all just a figment of overactive imaginations.
