A health care worker at a Texas hospital who provided care for the Ebola patient who was hospitalized there, and later died, tested positive for Ebola in a preliminary test at the state public health laboratory in Austin, officials said Sunday in a statement.

A statement posted on the Texas Department of State Health Service's website said "confirmatory testing will be conducted by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in Atlanta."

Officials said the health care worker reported a low grade fever Friday night and was isolated and referred for testing. Preliminary test results were received late Saturday.

"We knew a second case could be a reality, and we've been preparing for this possibility," said Dr. David Lakey, commissioner of the Texas Department of State Health Services. "We are broadening our team in Dallas and working with extreme diligence to prevent further spread."

I wonder when the health worker cared for this patient, before or after they were isolated.

The news conference I saw said that her contact with him was after he was admitted but it should be made clear at what point was she in contact with him and what was her role in his care.

It looks like Ontario could have two cases of Ebola although further testing is needed. On CBC this morning, they mentioned that 40 volunteers in Maryland will receive the Ebola vaccine in a trial to determine its effectiveness and what dosage should be given. Where the heck do they find volunteers willing to subject themselves to this? They are much braver than I.
Today on CBC television, they kept warning the public not to panic. Somehow, being told not to panic has the opposite effect. Sounds like there has already been an economic effect.
I googled Ebola and Airborne this morning and a CNN report came up. I learned that Ebola is an RNA virus that can mutate every time it copies itself. Most may be harmless but some could affect the way it is transmitted. One study found ll3 mutations in just one infected area. Some scientists are concerned that mutations are not being strictly monitored. It seems that there are different strains of Ebola, one called the Zaire strain.

How would they test effectiveness? Send them to Monrovia wearing underpants?

We in the west are so smart, we don't have to worry about Ebola the same as when Clements cut the nurses in Ontario by 20% and since Sars was spreading among the medical profession he was surprise to find that some nurses who had been laid off were working part time at 2 or 3 different hospitals. My daughter was one of these. When she developed severe leukemia and given a year to live she had no extra health care.
But despite Harris and Clement she survived. And is now working full time as a nurse.

They will test for antibodies, presumably Ebola resistant ones, following treatment.

Ebola outbreak: 2nd health care worker in Dallas tests positive
snip

Officials have said they don't know how the first health worker, a nurse, became infected. But the second case pointed to lapses beyond how one individual may have donned and removed personal protective garb.

"An additional health care worker testing positive for Ebola is a serious concern, and the CDC has already taken active steps to minimize the risk to health care workers and the patient," the CDC said in a statement.

"What happened there (in Dallas), regardless of the reason, is not acceptable. It shouldn't have happened," Anthony Fauci, director of the Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases of NIH, said on MSNBC on Wednesday.

In a conference call late Tuesday, the nation's largest nurses' union described how the patient, Duncan, was left in an open area of the emergency room for hours. National Nurses United, citing unidentified nurses, said staff treated Duncan for days without the correct protective gear, that hazardous waste was allowed to pile up to the ceiling and safety protocols constantly changed.

Figure the above says it all.
