Less than an hour after having heart surgery on Monday, Sister Theresa Stickley was alert and in high spirits, and was looking forward to going home the next day.

"I'm feeling pretty good. I had a little pressure in the chest, that's all," the 83-year-old woman told reporters from her hospital bed, with the lead surgeon by her side.

"When he told me there'd be cameras, I thought 'oh my goodness sake, just keep me covered,'" she said.

Sister Theresa's aortic valve replacement operation, which went beautifully, was fairly unique in that it was broadcast in real time and observed by hundreds of cardiologists at the 2014 Canadian Cardiovascular Congress in Vancouver.

It was even more unique due to the fact that the Squamish-based Sister was awake during the entire procedure.

This is amazing. My friend, Leona is awaiting valve replacement. Would be wonderful if she could have it done this way.

I think this was done in Vancouver Agate. She should print up this article and bring it to her doctor.

Surgery doesn't entail breaking the sternum

And THAT's the breakthrough.
The next step has to be for one of the commonest and most invasive surgeries: coronary bypass without sawing through the chest.

When that can be done without splitting a patient open like a splayed Perdue Oven Stuffer, we will have entered the new millennium.

(I told my cardio, if you cannot fix my artery/arteries percutaneously I FORBID you to slice me open or to allow any once else to do it. If you do not comply I will sue.)

I think it is still in trials Darcie but she certainly could volunteer for that, I sure would.
