Is there an easy way to slice a raw cabbage? Want to use it in a casserole and I have very little strength in my hands and wrists. groansmileyf.gif

I put it on the floor and get a cleaver and stick it in. Then I lift it up and bang it on the floor with my whole body behind it. Believe me, I don't get slices but I do get small enough pieces to put in the Cuisinart

I will bring a cabbage next time I go to your house and I want a demonstration. My casserole is just out of the oven, smells good and it better taste good too.

Savoys are much easier to slice than the dense green variety, and taste about the same. If you take your time and work from the outside shoud not be too bad. Failing that, get a helpful neighbour to cut it into portios that are easier to work with.

I always put a rutabaga in the micro for a minute or so on high to soften the outside and make it easier to cut up. Been doing that for years, and it works for moi.

For the first center cut, use a VERY long knife that can be grabbed at both ends (using gloves of course.) Then just PUSH down ofn the knife with both hands.
I have a couple knives with blades 10-11 inches that get the job done.

For me rutabaga and that hard, hard fruit that looks like a rutabaga (senior moment) are the toughest to slice.

Try a coconut if you want TOUGH.

I had to take it outside and smash it with a hammer on the sidewalk first. (But first I hammered a screwdriver in though one of the eyes to get and save the liquid.

I think the secrest of a cabbage is doing the first cut through the middle with a sharp knife LONG enough

That was my way of getting the liquid from the coconut. I used to take my cleaver and a hammer and open it that way, on cement of course, in the basement in winter and on the sidewalk in summer.

I have a strong old knife that I use this way except that I apply a hammer to the end without the handle. Works for squash and any very hard large vegetable.

Get someone else to cut up the turnip, to lift the turkey into the sink for washing/stuffing and into the roasting pan for the oven.

My grandson in law is great at the carving.

I can peel vegetables ok, doesn't take strength too much, just am slower that's all. Baking is fine thanks to all the electric appliances.

At times I do need assistance with vegetables for very large quantities to do in a short period of time.

I have never used electric appliances for any of my Christmas baking. In fact the batter for the shortbread is so heavy I cannot imagine it turning out the same way. Besides perhaps that is why I don't gain weight around this time as I can feel it in my tummy and hips when I am beating so vigorously. Perhaps one day I'll have to try using a mixer, but not yet.
