The first human case of H7N9 bird flu in North America has been confirmed in a woman from British Columbia who had recently visited China, federal health officials say.

The woman does not pose a risk to the public, officials said.

"The individual is a resident of British Columbia and was not symptomatic during travel and only became sick after arrival in Canada. The individual did not require hospitalization and is currently recovering from their illness, in self-isolation," the Public Health Agency of Canada said in a statement.

The B.C. resident returned to Canada on Jan. 12 from China and began feeling ill on Jan. 14.

During the spring of 2013, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported 132 human H7N9 infections, with 44 deaths.

Question that must be asked:
Was she (and they) infected by a bird or has the new influenza made the leap into the human population and thus it can be spread from person to person?

(Do people regularly visit China to pluck chickens?)

The article states that a live poultry market is suspected as the source. They said on news last night that this one is very hard to get infected with.

That's what they said about AIDS.

I'd bet that no one is planning on having close contact with the unfortunate couple. It has been reported that the incubation period is over and no other passengers on the plane with them have been affected. So, as with AIDS, this flu does not seem to be transmitted through the air, yet.
