My grand daughter is coming over this morning, which means pancakes and bacon.

I use yogurt rather than buttermilk, because the buttermilk never seems to get used up. Often I add blueberries.

What are yours like?

The idea that genes determine much about our health and lifespan is repugnant to many of us, so we turn instead to the voodoo of "good food" and "bad food."

I'm quite prepared to accept the notion of "good food" so long as it conforms to my idea of what tastes good and to my preferences.

More red wine!

It is all rooted in the stupid "But we've got to do SOMETHING" mentality that so permeates many professions, medical most of all.

They just CANNOT accept the concept that doing little or nothing is the very best that they can do. I just watched a good FRONTLINE episode documenting doctors' almost complete inability to stop themselves from doing one thing after another in the face of what they KNOW is a terminal illness. (The skeptic in me keeps nagging that if the $$$monetary rewards$$$ were removed, perhaps they would more readily accept their powerlessness.)

If it is genes that determine our ultimate fate, half the medical professionals could just fade away, just like the witch doctors of old did. Or the Hanoverian medical experts who believed that diagnoses of most diseases could be determined by the shape and quality of one's STOOL.
Probably in 100 years, today's medical practices will be viewed in the same light. "How could they have POSSIBLE done THAT?"

And today's answer: "Well, we had to do SOMETHING?"

don't eat like a bricklayer.

My son happens to be a bricklayer. He watches what he eats, plays hockey and basketball, runs and exercises regularly.

Masonry is a very physically demanding trade, and takes its toll on the body. He does all the above so he can keep working, and not be a complete wreck at 50.

And my son-in-law does the same thing because he sits and supervises programmers who work on making satellites work. Sitting at a desk all day is hard on the body as well.

Not many calories are consumed sitting at a desk instead of laying bricks all day.

So you should not eat as much as a bricklayer all other circumstances being equal.

OMG don't remind me. At least my father is no longer with us so I wont have to eat those damned pancakes tonite. I think I'll have roast pork. :snowflake:
