Three tobacco companies have been ordered to pay $15 billion in damages after losing a historic class-action lawsuit.

Judge Brian Riordan on Monday ruled in favour of two groups representing Quebec smokers, ordering Imperial Tobacco, Rothmans Benson & Hedges and JTI-MacDonald to pay for punitive and moral damages.

CBC News will carry a live news conference by the Quebec Council on Tobacco and Health at 5 p.m.

Tobacco lawyers attack expert witness before testimony in Quebec

The legal proceedings began in March 2012, 13 years after the lawsuit was initiated by the two groups comprising about one million people.

Oh My
My wife met an early demise due to smoking tobacco. She died a few months after this case went before the courts. Too bad she didn't live long enough to claim compensation!

My second husband died of lung cancer, but in BC. I personally knew an insider on the board of one of the companies concerned. I know for a fact that some of the allegations (more than three) about the company are true as I saw it myself.

This particular class action suit is on to represent Quebec smokers. Something similar should be started in other provinces.

Once a precedent is established in Quebec, I would assume that cases would be brought forward in the rest of the provinces.
The tobacco company's are planning to appeal this decision. If they appeal to the Supreme Court and lose, will the decision then apply across Canada.

I have no idea if this will include other provinces should the findings be positive for the victims.

And then next year there will be a quiet appeal that gets no notoriety and the $15 billion will be reduced to $50 million (2 million a year for 25 years) aka chump change.

Been there, Done that.

Do people not have to take responsibility for their own Health? What are they going to do next, sue the liquor distributors because people can't control their drinking! I smoked I quit, it's not easy, but one has to be determined. We had a guy here building our deck a couple years ago. He was on B.P. meds. was hospitalized with B.P. at 200 something, but still smoked a package per day! His wife worked for the lung association and brought home tons of literature, but he doesn't want to quit ~ he will someday!

I don't know, did you live with a smoker? As a kid I used to ride in vehicles with my parents both puffing away, and we as kids inhaled this crap!

I smoked like a chimney until I turned about 35, up to 2 packs a day...so 37 years and counting without a puff.
If health concerns weren't my main concern today's cost of a pack of cigarettes, about $12 a pack would demand the cheapskate in me quit.

Heck if it were a HEALTHY habit, I wouldn't spend $24 a day (almost 9 thousand dollars a year) on it. Not unless it granted me eternal life and a perpetually hard penis.

I stopped smoking at $1 a pack and started at $.25/pack.

I quit when the price hit $.67 a pack. Back in 1967.

With the tobacco money I saved, I was able to buy property at the lake, and build on it. I have spent a total of $65,000 there.
The place is now worth at least $165,000 now. So, not only did I save my tobacco money, I have more than doubled what I saved!
