This is box spring part 2.

REAL box springs are hard to find and never with cheaper mattresses. All you get today is a wooden or steel box covered in fabric.
So 30 years ago we spent almost $1 grand for a Beutyrest set Extra Long Twin. It was always way too hard and destroyed my back. After about day 3 Bob took the bullet and used it for 3 decades, but the rock hard mattress has finally had it with springs beginning to poke through the sides.

So I sprang for a cheapy mattress at Walmart (link to El Cheapo) It is supposed to be be pretty soft, aka plush
but I won't buy one of their wooden box foundations and for the time being we will use the $$$Beautyrest box spring which is full of real springs and in good shape.

Net will be a 75 inch long mattress on an 80 inch box spring. oooh 02

Now for the fun: :ciao: :ciao: :ciao:
What do you think are my chances of sawing off 5 inches of the box spring and having the cut side always against the wall. Yeah, I know the joy of cutting through spring steel. :badcold5qz
If it works we could always wrap it in one of those mattress bags...or leave it as is.
If a nightmare result, then I will be forced to buy a new twin sized box spring...without springs. 017

Could you get some kind of bolster or long pillow to fill in the end by the headboard or does that make any sense. You could then put pillows on top and the end would be even.

I would go and get a piece of foam to fill the space as haili said, put a pillow case on it an shove it on the box spring under the bottom sheet. No need to cut at all.

Make your own box foundation. Do it right the first time. You will never be happy with a hybrid.

I cut a water bed down from King size to Queen size once. In fact I still sleep on it!

I considered putting the mattress outside in the winter and once it was frozen solid, cutting enough out of the middle with a chain saw, to make it Queen size.
Then before the ice melted, taping it together with some tape in order to make a seal.
I gave up on the idea when I failed to find a suitable tape to hold it together. :sigh:

The bolster ideas are good but one reason for the switch to a twin was to reclaim the 5 inches between the end of the bed and the dressers. My FULL is 75inches and a 75 inch twin will fit the room a lot better than the 80 inch. So the mattress cannot be lengthened, but rather the spring must be shortened.
Had I wanted to go 80 inches I'd have bought another extra long twin mattress.

Campy,
I could make a box but probably not worth it compared to buying a simple box. The problem is that I want a spring foundation and that is impossible for a DIY. I replaced a couple springs in my recliner and working with them is extraordinarily difficult and frankly quite dangerous.

I guess I'll know more when I rip the gauzy bottom off the box spring.

You would need a mini grinder to cut the springs.

Hopefully you can just remove some from the ends.

This is one of those hit and miss projects. Never know what you are going to run into.:It's the steel rim that has to be in place to hold the springs that might be the tough part.

What seems to be the scary part is the top perimeter. Bottom is easy, just a wooden rectangle but the top seems to be a frame of tensile steel, maybe 3/8 inch that ultimately holds all the springs in.
Cutting that will need oomph. I have Dreml type grinders with a couple small radiac blades, a hack saw, and a saber saw with, I HOPE, a carbide tipped blade. Ilve cut springs and they are bad enough, but that thick tensile piece may be a challenge. And untimately cutting it might cause the whole works to fall apart. Well, at least after I'm done I'll be a little smarter than I am now.
Deciding what tool I will need will depend on taking the bed down and tearing off the gauze bottom but I will wait until the new mattress arrives.

Next mini-project will involve trying to sew a couple extra-long fitted sheets and transform them into twin length. I give that a 50-50 chance of success. I'm not being cheap, but new sheets so often feel like plastic compared to old sheets that feel like BUTTAH.

Hey, I perfected a way of transforming those deep DEEP fitted sheets for 20 inch mattresses into a good fit for my 11 inch thick full sized mattress. YAAAY.

If only it wasn't so hard getting that cast iron SINGER in and out of the closet floor...it is a back breaker.

Rent a mini grinder. Keep a fire extinguisher handy.

I hope it doesn't turn into a jack in the box.

Very observant, campy...that's my fear too.
Once I cut into that top perimeter steel frame, I may get springs shooting all over the bedroom. Thinking maybe I could wire the two loose ends together?

Worth a try though...but more likely is my having to buy a $100 wooden box, laughingly called a "box SPRING." (The more honest purveyors call it a "foundation" these days.)
Fallback Alternative

Lesson:
We are going cheap because last time we went for the $$$$ BEST $$$$ and got the most uncomfortably hard bed on the planet and Bob lived with it for 3 decades. $1000 bucks back when $1000 was real money for a TWIN XL to feel like you are sleeping on the floor. I am an expert on bargains but that was one of the few times I was royally SCREWED by false advertising.

Also, since our combined ages is 160, there is no need for anything guaranteed for 20 years. We have eliminated the word "firm" from our vocabulary and replaced it with the word "MUSHY" (If I thought the walls could support it, I'd string two hammocks.)

The mattress arrived and we packed the old one in plastic...required by NYC law to prevent bedbug spread.

I tore off the back of the box spring and saw pretty much what I expected.
If I cut 5 inches down through two side heavy pieces and through the wood, I should bet what I need. Basically I would be removing one row of springs. Question is would the sides spread apart, but I am hoping not because of the many cross wires holding them in place. I could be wrong.
If I need more hold-together I could use rope or wire (clothes hanger?) I will cut the fabric in such a way as to be able to recover the cut side. It would never look GOOD, but maybe good enough to sit flush against a wall.

I will use a grinder and probably some tape to smooth and cover all the cut steel ends.

Last picture is the top/bottom steel which seems a bit thicker than the sides, but I would have no need to cut through.

NOTE TO SELF: WEAR GLOVES.

Remember Madame, the 80 year old dirty old lady puppet. She was having regular sex with a 16 year old boy and was asked, don't you consider that dangerous? Her reply was "If he dies, he dies."
(Same with the box spring.)

It might wind up a pig's breakfast but then no loss.

That mattress from Walmart, the Slumber One- 10 inch, is absolutely terrific and at an unbelievable price...and free shipping yet.
And I know because I have been pricing them for months in both stores and on-line.
I recommend it highly.
