Not getting enough sleep really does boost your risk of catching a cold, a new study suggests.

The study involved 164 healthy people who wore wristbands (similar to fitness trackers) for a week to monitor their sleep habits. Then, participants were given nasal drops containing rhinovirus, the virus that causes the common cold. The subjects were quarantined in a hotel, and monitored to see who got sick.

After five days, nearly one-third (29 percent) of participants showed symptoms of a cold — namely a runny nose.

People who got less than 6 hours of sleep per night the week before they were exposed to the virus were about four times more likely to catch a cold, compared to those who got more than 7 hours of sleep a night that week, the study found.

I wonder how a wristband can determine that you are asleep?
