Our son is getting married on Friday, and there will be a reception for about 200. Thankfully that is all laid on at the Old Mill in Toronto.

But the happy couple have asked us to play host to more than 30 people for the rehearsal dinner on Wednesday, and to serve breakfast, or brunch, to half a dozen groomsmen on the day of the wedding.

On Saturday, we will have a whole crowd of our friends and relatives from out of town over for drinks and a barbecue.

We are serving tapas and tapas like dishes for the rehearsal dinner, and are getting a head start on it today -- Spanish meatballs with a lot of garlic nutmeg; a white bean salad, also Spanish; roasted red peppers; a whole salmon, poached and served cold, probably with curry mayonnaise; a couple of large Spanish tortillas (egg, potato and onion); and some desserts.

The groom and his pals get scrambled eggs, bacon, toast, and fruit.

For the bbq we will keep it simple and do burgers with potato salad and probably a huge apple crisp for dessert.

After all this we will be happy to head out to our country place and collapse for a week or two.

True. Canmore at this time of year is not exactly a spa.

LOL! I cannot figure out why people live there and pay the horrendous real estate prices. It's not close to anything and has always been cold when I've been there. I'd much rather live in the scenic Okanagan where it's warm and for far less money! I guess I'm missing something! I understand it's a get away for Calgary people. I wonder how many properties are for sale now that our economy has tanked!

It's worse than you think.

My friend is a fairly serious alcoholic (he drinks three bottles of wine daily.) This has finally taken a toll. His wife, also a good friend of ours, confided to Mrs. Heat this week that he has had three horrendous vomiting episodes since they came to Toronto last Thursday, and she is pretty sure he was vomiting some blood. Sounds like his liver is packing it in.

Can't imagine what life must be like with him. He knows he is drinking himself to death, and doesn't care. Their son, only child, committed suicide a few years back.

This is so sad Heat, what a way to die, slowly and making your loved ones miserable.

Drinking a bottle of vodka and jumping through a hole in the ice on the Bow River, as his son did, is pretty sad too.

My friend keeps the television on all night to block the images that run through his head. His wife has nightmares for the entire month of February, when he went through the ice.

How tragic! Alcoholism is generally just committing suicide slowly. I hope the wife has a good support system.

What a gut wrenching story that appears to lack any hope but more of the same for the future. So very sad.
