I almost have to nail down any plants recently planted! We're experiencing a period of very strong winds and so far they have lasted 3 days and nights straight. According to my anemometer 4 bft. Hutt Weather |

Beaufort 4 is only categorized as a moderate breeze. But I guess strong enough to move forest fires.

Those strong winds are not likely helping the south island fires. |

Mt Hutt, not to be confused with the Hutt Valley, recorded sustained winds of 221 kph. Winds around the valley were very strong all day yesterday too. My grandson just escaped being knocked on the head with a flying branch torn off a tree in the backyard. Today, winds have dropped, but it's now turned to the south and temperatures have plummeted 11°C. Yesterday some towns in the south experienced over 10°C drops in an hour period from 20°C to 10°C 10:00am to 11:00am. Christchurch had temperatures over 30° as did many towns in eastern Australia ... and the fires which accompanied them. |

In different parts of the country there has been considerable wind damage eg roofs lifted, trees downed power lines etc. Apart from branches flying here, no damage to our place. Just at the moment the winds abated a bit and shifted to the south and the temperature has fallen sharply. |

220 kph is indeed a strong wind! We are waiting to hear if Hurricane Oho will hit the west coast with any significance. So far just lots of rain here. Haida Qwaii might see more wind and definitely lots of rain. I think it is still too early for major storms. |

Downsized to a post hurricane and possibly making for some great cold water surfing in areas further north. We are no longer expecting anything to come our way - besides rain. |
