Wood pellet stoves; Any experience with them?

We've used the pellet stove for a few weeks now, and it's great. Even at the lowest setting it keeps the place quite comfortable. Don't know what it would do in the depths of winter when the temperature really plunges, but really good right now.

We also had a ton of insulation blown into the attic (it's probably well north of R60) and that seems to keep the temperature on the second floor quite even and the rooms toasty.

Enbridge finally hooked natural gas up to the house, but need to get a couple of things done before we call them for inspection and have the gas turned on. That will be a great relief, because we are still cooking outside.

This has been a much longer stay than we planned, but things keep coming up -- need to get some rust spots fixed on the Subaru and have a trailer hitch installed, among other things.

Son and his wife, who are living with us in Toronto, say they miss us a lot. I think they mean they miss regular meals which they don't have to cook.

Do pellet stoves include an automatic stoker or do you just pour in bucketsful of pellets as needed?

I gotta say, after reading all these posts, I have new appreciation for my two steam valves although I wish I could set up some kind of reliable thermostatic control over them.

This stove has a hopper that holds about 40 pounds of pellets. Goes for many, many hours.

We do have a boiler and radiators all ready to go in this place, but that is a project for next year.

Is your stove noisy Heat? Perhaps it was because my SIL's is an older model that it seemed so very noisy.

Take care,
Pat

It squeaks a bit from time to time, but otherwise very quiet.

Quite pleasant sitting in the living room and watching the flames.

Just in passing, my son mentioned that his heating bill for the 2014/15 winter was $400 less than what it was before he bought the pelle stove. The house is electrically heated.

Is he including the cost of pellets?
Is he amortizing the cost of the stove, and the chimney (likely needed to be added in an all electric house?)

He had a chimney for a wood stove but it was in the wrong place so had to have a new one installed. He figures that the over-all cost will be covered in 3 or 4 years.
There is some electrical use required for the stove, For trhe auger and the circulating blower.

I'll be visiting my son over Easter and I will try and get the answer to your question then!

I guess the price per ton will mean more to him.
