http://www.thestar.com/news/queenspark/2015/11/26/liberals-to-phase-out-eco-fees-in-ontario.html And here I've been blaming the Ontario government for these excessive fees, and it has been a cartel of corporations who did it. Give them a bit of freedom and they take advantage of you. I hope the government axes this cartel. |

Originally it was a McGuinty politically toxic tax grab around 2010 which charged manufacturers a levy for recycling their products. Some companies passed on these costs to consumers which ranged from a few cents to several dollars per product, but it backfired on him because charging eco fees was not and is not about protecting the environment, it's just another tax grab. It was even levied on environmentally friendly products including grass seed, the tax also amounted to charging consumers a fee for a service already being provided through the tax base a that time. Not only that, the gov’t created a new agency, Stewardship Ontario with the authority to levy taxes without debate in the House. There’s some bull to the bit about blaming cartels as it was the McGuinty gov’t which gamed the system to make it appear that the Liberals were not increasing taxes. http://london.ctvnews.ca/ontario-consumers-face-higher-eco-fees-for-big-televisions-new-phones-1.1223814 The government maintains the eco fees are not taxes because they are administered by industry-led stewardship agencies, and the revenue does not go to the province. No one buys that argument, said Hudak. "When they hear that the industry is doing it and the Liberals are hands off on these eco taxes, they're rightly calling out bull on that one," he said. "The Liberal approach under (former premier) Dalton McGuinty and now Kathleen Wynne is just a tax grab for an expensive bureaucracy." |
