That's great news Campy. The only downside is the loss of some cabinet space. I had a portable dishwasher years ago and it was a total PITA. |

That is called LUCKING OUT! But like Olive says, it costs under-cabinet space. Edited by Trotsky, Jan 8 2016, 06:12 AM.

I am willing to have a single sink instead of a double. That will free up counter and cabinet space. |

I have a portable dishwasher which works fine for me. It is no problem to wheel it over, and I actually used the top of it for rolling out all my shortbread. I do not have enough space to accommodate a built in dishwasher. Take care, Pat |

You are so fortunate that your landlord will do it for free. My handyman quoted me $350 AND I would have to buy the dishwasher, so installation would have been more than that Frigidaire unit. But for me, the issue is not money (I never thought I'd hear myself say that) but very limited space. I threw out an immense amount of stuff, some wonderful, to move into Manhattan and I just cannot part with anything else. Campy, I recommend you get an "old fashioned" one with a dial timer that you can roll back and get double washes without using more hot water or detergent. The push-button auto-cycle models hamper people who can make an appliance run the best way they can. I devised a way to wash aluminum and copper pots by using only a tsp. of hand dishwashing liquid (like Palmolive Green) which does not contain hypochlorite (bleach) which blackens copper. But the amount must be precise because these products can fill your KITCHEN with suds if too much is used. Good luck...take pictures of the install. Edited by Trotsky, Jan 9 2016, 03:02 AM.

I guess I'm a naysayer. Why does a person who probably nine days out of ten washes dishes for three meals a day for one need a dishwasher? Heck! Campy, you could just stack the dishes in the in sink rinser, turn on the hot water and be done! :-) My grandfather could never understand why we soaped our dishes. He said we should just rinse them under real hot water when we finished a meal and be done! I sorta think he had a point. My wife disagrees!!! |

Tipacanoe, used to think like that when I had three younger kids. Then my husband bought a dishwasher and said the kids would have less colds and flu, thought he was a little off base but he was right I am a firm believer in dishwashers since. I haven't had a cold or the flu since 1986, don't know if I should thank my hand washing habits, my immune system or my dishwasher. |

If it were only that easy. I also do a lot of baking and cooking so lots of pots and pans and sticky stuff. Then putting them in the dishwasher instead of out on the counter keeps them out of sight and the place looks neater. I figure washing dishes by hand and drying them at each meal takes up to two hours a day. It's a bloody mundane task to begin with. And there's no way the dishes are cleaner and rinsed better by hand then in a dishwasher. The hot water to begin with and rinsing just doesn't compare. Washing dishes is a royal pain in the ass. You just get finished and you have to start again. I can find better ways of using whatever time I have left in this world without dishpan hands. |
