I was in safeway this afternoon, this younger couple were perusing the meat dept. He picked up a rib roast and said to me do you think this is a pricing error? I said yes, the roast was about 4 lbs. and 87.00! He asked the meat mgr., no it was the proper price at 47.00 per kg! I'm glad I bought a side of bison at 6.25 per lb. I do hope the producers are reaping some of these profits! Meat Mgr. siad he'd just sold a roast twice the size for 170.00 ~unbelievable!

I bought a bag of fresh cauliflower at Costco for 4.89 I believe it was. It was much cheaper than a head at 6.00 in the stores. i also buy the bags of fresh broccoli at Costco.

Now that BBQ season is past, beef prices should fall for some cuts at least. Ground beef is more affordable than it was a few months ago. Beef used to be a staple but now I think of it as a rare treat. Chicken now rules.
According to my doctor.

He said you only have to eat meat like beef once a month to get the vitamins and nutrition that vegetarians don't get on a vegetable only diet.

I just love the stuff steamed just to the tenderness I want.

And then I make a cheese sauce with paprika for it.

I'm going to spring for it anyway price or not.

For the first time in my life that I can remember, I pick stuff up in stores, check the price, and put it back.

There is a store in our town that puts stuff like ripe bananas and vegetables that are past their prime at a huge marked down price.

The bananas are great for muffins and cake. I guess tons of stuff are thrown out by stores every day.

When Spooky (the dog) first came to live here, I didn't realize he was a counter surfer. I left a small prime rib roast on the counter and when I returned to the kitchen the roast was gone!! I was not happy but Spooky was!!

Campy: re rent a roast - my laugh for the morning!!

Swing: Another happy Costco customer here - I buy a lot of greens from Costco and split the bag with a neighbour.

Safeway had a small head of cauliflower for 6.99; a produce store across the street had cauliflower twice the size of Safeway's for 5.99. Never thought 5.99 for a head of cauliflower would be a bargain.

I don't eat beef but this seems to be the trend during the holiday periods. I stopped at the grocery store very briefly Yesterday as I was in the mall, I hate shopping at Zehrs simply for that reason they jack their prices up keep it there because people will continue to buy.. The other day I stopped at Food Basics on my way home from an appt. 2 whole chickens on sale for $8.00 per bag. I bought 3 bags.. 2 bags I cut up the chicken separated the legs from breasts etc The third left them whole to cook in my Nu-Wave Oven.

I walked out of Zehrs with a pkg of 50% reduced asparagus , I paid $1.50 for 20 stalks nothing wrong with them , Cauliflower was reduced but still expensive, nix that Lettuce was out of the question @ 3.98 I found a box of Baby Romaine lettuce reduced by half for 2.49 that worked And celery which I came into the store for originally was $3.98 a bunch..... I needed tomatoes looked for the least expensive and smaller ones but still ended up paying nearly 3.50 for 5 Roma tomatoes oooh 02

Beef is expensive, try an alternative and the key is to go through the flyers see which has the best buys Freshco for me seems to be the best where items even when not on sale are still reasonable. Most stores will honour another's lower cost if you produce proof with a flyer.. I shop only for me I am on a budget stretching $$$ is important...

I seldom eat meat. I have switched to Sardines. A can a day. Never get tired of them and share a bit with the dog, Ginny. Cheap and handy from Fortinos. Fillets from Portugal at $2.09 per can.

How about Mackerel from Portugal. I have been picking up a few cans lately. I like them packed in water.

I lean more towards fish, but buying cod from Norway is very expensive, as is wild Pacific Salmon. I had forgotten how good Kippered Herring were till I had some on toast the other day. Will go get some tomorrow. It is difficult to find fish that is not from China.

I wait for boneless/skinless chicken breast to be on sale. I got no antibiotic ones the other day for approx. $1.75 each. Got a dozen.

Now that I have my upright freezer I will be able to take advantage of this type of sale for meat and/or fish more often.

I purchase chicken breasts when they are on sale. Part of that goes to dinner and I cook extra to be sliced up for sandwiches at noon. I hate paying a fortune for pre-packaged meats that are loaded with who-knows-what extras.

Like Durgan, I eat a lot of Portuguese sardines. Herring fillets can be pretty good too.

In general I am for a minimum of three servings of healthy fish a week.

I am always suspect of the word thrown around too glibly, PRIME.
Unless you are a restaurant or hotel with a contract with a meat distributer, you will not be getting PRIME BEEF.

A few decades ago the U.S Dept. of Agriculture pulled a fast one and upgraded all beef a notch.
SELECT was promoted to CHOICE and CHOICE was upped to PRIME. (I presume former "prime' stayed PRIME with a wink towards SUBLIME?

The old SELECT that became the new CHOICE was replaced by the old STANDARD (which was basically for fit pet food or ground beef.)

So today's beef is a far cry from the quality we could buy in 1960.

This has nothing to do with the grading system. Simply a cut of roast in Canada.

I had always assumed that "prime rib" meant prime grade meat. I guess I was wrong.

I have never cooked one nor ever even ordered it unless given no choice (like a wedding dinner.) I am intimidated by the cost and the ease of overcooking it. Every time I have ordered it RARE, I have gotten it too well done. I always think of it as steamed steak.

WE do not use the terms "prime" "choice" etc. for beef in Canada.
There is a letter code, but most people buy their beef not knowing how it has been coded.

You would be hard pressed to find anything like "prime" beef in Canada with its extensive marbling of fat.
