This morning I went to Loblaws to pick up a few last minute items. Some years I have made a triple broccoli and cheese casserole because everyone likes it so much, but thank goodness I decided to go with just a double. I had not watched the cash as items were being rung up. When I got in the car and checked my bill I saw it was $12.06!!!

Learned a lesson too. Last Friday I picked up two large red plates which turned out to be charger plates, and I was surprised to find they were on sale for $2.25. I planned on buying two more today, but they were gone. Guess I should have gone back in and picked them up on Friday.

Take care,
Pat

My daughter showed me a beautiful head of cauliflower - organic and she paid $5 a head, the regular head was $7 and smaller.

Pays to check.

I found lovely little $1.99 Brussells Sprouts downstairs, beat the $6 at the farmers' market. As long as that price holds, I will be eating them daily.

Yes, cauliflower has gone sky high.

What are "charger Plates?"

Yes, just for the broccoli Helen. I buy the crowns as when one buys the bunches there is so much waste I find it works out to the same amount. There is still a tin of mushroom soup and old cheddar cheese to be added to it along with other ingredients. Surely not cheap with the price of produce these days.

Take care,
Pat

You put the regular plates on top of them. I planned to use them as trays though for giving my baking away. That'll teach me.

Take care,
Pat

I make a broccoli casserole that uses almost all of the stem too. I cut the stem thinly and steam them until half done, then I add the crowns to the steamer and steam all until tender-crisp. I then put the steamed broccoli into my Kitchen Aid chopper, buzz and add parmesan, salt and pepper and nutmeg and a few spoons sour cream, mix, put in casserole and I can heat and serve that day or next.

Pat - if you use a potato peeler to take of the outer peel of the broccoli stems and slice them they are even better than the crowns. We both like them even better and there is no waste at all.

Thanks Lilal and Angora. I'll have to give that a try. The price per kg was $8.80. Oh and what we used to call Brown 'N Serve Rolls and they now call Dinner Rolls are $4.19/dozen. Everyone seems to forget 80% of them were not eaten last year. I wish I could find my receipt from Friday to see how much the rutabaga cost.

Take care,
Pat

I am sure it was not that much last year, sigh No wonder my bill was $85. Thought it was my last trip but I forgot I really
need some corn starch so will have to pop back tomorrow after tai chi.

I was shocked at the price of those small garlic loaves which were about $5 each and finally ended up paying $6.25 for one with cheese topping from the deli which will serve more people than the 2 small ones. Back to sales in Jan.!

I dealt with the Brussel sprout and broccoli prices by asking my 26 y/o to buy some!
I may have to remind her that the only person who might not eat the sprouts is my GS.
i am now trying to decide if we need anything else in the event my other D is planning to rely on me. She worked five shifts, one day off, then two more shifts - no wonder she is worn out. Only five of us for Christmas dinner, a fondue on the 24th and nibbles on the 26th. Then she is back to work with another 5 on, 1 off, 5 on.
I think we will rely on leftovers - heavy on the vegetables.

My bff, her husband and John and I used to celebrate New Year's together with fondues both cheese and chocolate. We played silly games too. It is one of my fondest memories. My bff and her husband divorced and we've never found another couple so compatico. Barb- my friend and I still are very close but we don't spend New Years together. Oh my, I think I'm getting maudlin.

I think we all become so nostalgic this time of year and reflect on what we used to have.

Take care,
