Alan Kurdi’s rejected refugee application

A defining moment of the 2015 election campaign was reaction to the Syrian refugee crisis after images surfaced of a lifeless, three-year-old Syrian boy lying on a Turkish beach. When the heart-wrenching images were first reported, we were told the family of Alan Kurdi had applied to be refugees in Canada, but had been rejected by the Harper government.

There was an immediate backlash against the Conservatives; many directly blamed the Harper government for the death of Alan, his older brother and mother.

But when the immigration department was contacted, we learned the original media reports were incorrect. Alan’s parents never applied to come to Canada, although his uncle had submitted an incomplete application.

Misinformation spread, however, and the reaction to a tragic death marked the beginning of the end of Harper’s already troubled campaign.

The public relies on the media to be fair and accurate. All journalists should resolve to make 2016 a year of more thorough and honest reporting.

It strikes me that Assad and the Russians are doing the vast majority of bombing in Syrian cities.

Delphi,
Has it occurred to you that is the way Canadian media WANTS it to strike you?

Surely the long term solution is to settle the refugees in their own environments. What I am suggesting is pour money and infrastructure in the problem countries.

At present there are 12 million refugees in and about Syria. This is only the tip of an iceberg world wide. No effort by Western Nations can even begin to cope by accepting such large numbers, without major disruptions.

A new approach must be presented.
Hear! Hear! Good post! Keep in mind my contention that this migration has been completely generated by ISIS as part of their plan to reestablish the Ottoman Empire.
In the same manner as Israel was established, a new country should be set up for the refugee's rather than allow the ISIS plan to disrupt western society.
