I'm shocked I say, shocked that the Trudeau regime and sunny ways would go for this.

Canada’s military plans to monitor the world’s social media
Military intelligence wants 24/7 access to the world’s social media streams, and they don’t want anyone knowing it’s them.

So much for transparency and openness – never mind –sunny ways

Monitoring social media is the smart way to go these days. Good for Trudeau!

I suspect that CSIS monitors quite a few things behind the scenes, having key words and phrases that raise a flag. It would be prudent to watch what one says and does online, you don't want to get on their radar.

DT, I have been told that US private corporations monitor their employees on social media.

Looks like it has been done but not under the umbrella of one agency/system.
Quote:

After reportedly already spending $20 million on media monitoring services, the Conservative-led Stephen Harper government is also looking to fill another tender for a “Social Media Monitoring” system to “meet the needs of Federal Government Departments and Agencies.”

It appears that the procurement request, released in January, has yet to be filled, while companies like IBM, IG Global Intelligence, and SecDev Cyber, among many others, have all made bids on the tender. A similar tender from 2013 was already awarded.

For its part, American government agencies and law enforcement entities have been actively engaged in tracking the online social media happenings of its citizens. In the wake of a machete attack on a police officer, the NYPD plans to increase surveillance of social media in an effort to pre-identify lone wolf terrorist attacks before they happen.

Meanwhile, everyone from the Federal Reserve to the NSA has been gobbling up social media data on Americans. As for Canada, the practise has only begun in earnest in the last year. Harper is known to depend on media monitoring services to master his political spin, giving him a finger on the pulse of public interests.

snip

Parsons told me that the sharing of the personal data of Canadian, in general, is only becoming more pervasive across government agencies.

“There has been a marked increase in the sharing of personal data between and across different departments because information is initially being collected for vague or far-sweeping reasons. Were social media information collected for similarly vague reasons then the government could then try to expansively share collected information across government,” he said.

In other words, at present, social media monitoring within the Canadian government is a veritable Wild West.

That's why most large corporations have an IT dept. The company I used to work for many moons ago, monitored internet activity and had red flags on malicious sites. Back when I worked, there was no Facebook, Twitter, Blogs etc, and if I ran a company today, I'd like to know what my employees are up to. There is a lot of corporate espionage these days, many employees have no loyalty, and many do a lot of personal business on company time.

FSG, you have no idea. It never bothered me if Harper monitored social media. I would hope he would do that. Other countries have been doing it for awhile. Social media is public. They cannot monitor private messages. If you want to criticize Trudeau for anything, criticize him for being late to the party.

Nothing new. It seems likely that we have been doing this since February 2014,

Social media to be monitored by federal government

Has anyone ever thought that what was said on social media was secret from government?

I must say that I am really shocked that you didn't know you were being monitored.

Of course I knew.. this is new pointing points to the lack of openness (they don't want anyone knowing ) no surprise I guess, and the fact that when called no one was available to answer.

The second link also says, the Liberal government is refusing to make public a recently completed assessment of the state of human rights in Saudi Arabia even as it endures criticism for proceeding with a $15-billion deal to ship weaponized armoured vehicles to the Mideast country.

More lack of openness...

Indeed, and I seem to remember the left complaining about it bitterly calling it an invasion of privacy. Seems to be okay if Liberals do it though...
