An announcement that French's will be using Southwestern Ontario tomatoes — including those grown in Chatham-Kent — has the local agricultural community optimistic.

The company, which is mostly known for its mustard, plans to make tomato paste at Highbury Canco in Leamington before shipping it off to other processing facilities that turn it into ketchup.

Kim Cooper, the municipality economic development officer for agriculture, called it a positive development for local producers.

“They're going to be using Chatham-Kent and Essex tomatoes,” he told The Daily News Friday. “This is great news. I know that it will affect a number of our farmers.”

Cooper credited Highbury Canco for being proactive in trying to increase production at the plant, which was formerly operated by Heinz until the company shut down operations in 2014.

That's great news. We must return to the past where factories provided steady jobs.

Too many Canadian plants using local produce have been closed. I would like to see a list do you suppose there is one.
