Guess everyone wants their own Trudashians
We all know now that at an event to mark Martin Luther King, Sophie Gregoire broke into an impromptu musical number she wrote for her daughter.
Partisanship aside, did no one advise her beforehand about protocol and so on. It wouldn't have been so bad had it been relevant (and please, don't try to spin it it that it was) or if she could actually carry a tune. The crowd was polite of course, what else could they do in the face of a huge faux pas, a 'song' that had nothing to do with civil rights etc. Most people are being very kind about it though, but she shouldn't give up her day job.

Hold the flames please.

5. Has this kind of thing happened before?
If you mean the wife of a Canadian prime minister breaking into song, it’s not unheard of in the Trudeau family. Justin’s mother, Margaret, once serenaded a 1976 state dinner in Venezuela with a “song of love” inspired the charity of work of that country’s first lady.

If you’re referring to the mixing of politics and song—my, what short memory you have. It was only in 2009 that then-prime minister Stephen Harper stunned a National Arts Centre gala by singing the Beatles’ “With a Little Help From My Friends,” accompanied by his hobbyist backing band and international superstar cellist Yo Yo Ma. Jack Layton and Bob Rae have also been known to sing for their supporters. But to the best of our knowledge, not since Margaret Trudeau has a prime minister’s spouse been heard singing in public. (We welcome your corrections here.)

6. Oh, yes, how does it compare to Stephen Harper’s voice and/or piano playing?

At the risk of inciting partisan wrath—come on, no contest here. Harper is a flat, uninteresting singer—small wonder he chose to debut with a Ringo Starr song, setting the bar low. (As a singer, of course, Starr is a fantastic drummer.) Harper’s piano playing is also rudimentary: most of his choice of material (the Beatles’ “Hey Jude,” Neil Diamond’s “Sweet Caroline,” the Proclaimers’ “I’m On My Way”) requires him to do little else but play plonky quarter notes. It’s possible Grégoire-Trudeau’s skills as a flautist are as clunky as Harper’s ivory tickling, but she is classically trained, and there’s no question she’s the superior singer. Put her in front of a band and let’s see what happens.

It really did not seem appropriate. She sang well but it had nothing to do with MLK.

laugh123 laugh123 How soon we forget, memory problems.

Must be a drag to put someone down and find out that your 'man' did the same thing.

My laugh for the day.

Not smoking pot? Too serious for young voters perhaps. Not enough promises.?

Too tough on the purse strings. ?

Not enough selfies? Anyway that was him. Not her.

My thoughts too, but I don't agree she sang well, I'm no singer but I know off key and off pitch when I hear it.

No surprise Margaret T. would do something like that, but the event Harper played at was actually a concert, musical stuff you know, arranged with the venue along with Yo Yo Ma. It was not akin to bursting into song at a civil rights event. If it had been a song to do with civil rights then it could be seen as reasonable, it wasn’t. She can’t sing, she was off key, even the Star said she wobbled in and out of pitch, painfully reached for notes well outside her range, failing to present any evidence that the song had any sort of formal structure or coherence.

Hopefully she won't turn into another Margaret Trudeau, at least for Justin's sake or turn another serious civil rights event into all about her.

I really meant that she sang well in that she actually semed to be more musical than Harper and has a pleasant voice. Yes, she was off at times, probably when she started to realise that she should not have started.

After having Harper as prime minister, this is a very minor faux pas in the embarrassment department.
