Air Miles Expiry Date

Starting this year, Air Miles more than 5 years old will quietly be deducted from your total. There is no warning but you can go to the Air Miles site and find out how many miles are ready to expire. You submit an email and they will get back to you.
I'm quite surprised and dismayed that they would not automatically warn people. I think I may have quite a few hanging by their fingernails at the edge of the abyss.

I have never understood why they are called air miles and not points because they bear no relationship to actual miles.
I have never gotten nor used a single air mile.

Olive,
Does this 5 year expiration apply to ALL credit cards, and ALL airlines? (I have friends I could warn.)

It applies to all air miles you have collected on your Air Miles Card which includes those from credit cards. I have just under 6000 miles.

In the past I've used air miles to travel to Edmonton 3 times and also for numerous movie passes.

I went ahead and ordered a Hoover full size cordless vacuum for 3600 miles. It runs for 50 minutes without a charge. I like Hoover air tunnel technology and a cordless vacuum could make life easier. This will get rid of most of the older miles, I believe.

Trotsky, I'm not sure if the USA air mile program is doing the same but your friends should check.

I just went to the site and can't tell when the points I have were acquired.

I am not amused, what do I say in the email, except hey buster, give me back my points.

Will They?

I had many air miles when they first came out. I had five people two trips to NZ, several to the Dominican Republic, Florida, three to Vancouver. Finally lost 140K miles due to lack of use. Then threw the card in the garbage. Why even have them? They must drive up the cost of flying.

Seems this is nothing new. This is from the Terms and Conditions under Participation in the Program:

Quote:

If no miles are posted to any of your Collector Accounts or redeemed from any of your Collector Accounts for a period of 24 consecutive months, we may cancel the miles recorded in all of your Collector Accounts without notice or compensation to you.

Miles that have been in a Collector Account for at least 5 years will expire on last day of the calendar quarter in which the fifth anniversary of the date on which they were posted to the Collector Account occurs, without notice or compensation to you. Miles posted to a Collector Account on or before December 31, 2011 will be deemed to have been posted on December 31, 2011.

Seems like this year was singled out because any air miles gathered before 2011 become void on Dec 31, 2016.
There probably were warnings along the way but nothing that I can recall. I still think they should send you a warning email that this will happen.
Durgan, I don't regret collecting as I did have the advantage of free travel and a few other freebies. And the vacuum cleaner will come in very handy. I would have been very disappointed to lose them.
However, the card I use most often now is cash back which rebated around 170.00 last year.

I am sure you are on the money OO. I was just coming back to say since 2011 was singled out that made sense. I never amassed enough for travel but got many Rewards over the years. However a few years back I quit using my Air Miles card after they introduced Cash and I opted for it but the paltry 300 points I had remaining in Rewards could not be used for anything as they upped the points required for most items, and I was unable to transfer them.

I too prefer my Visa as well as Capitol One at Costco that provide cash back. At some stores, of course, we can use them in conjunction with Air Miles.

I do not spend enough at Shoppers Drug Mart to amass a lot of points but Kim and her friends end up with hundreds of dollars which they use for Christmas gifts. I do have $85 there right now but that is it.

Loblaws have PC Plus Points and I bought a lot of soil and plants back in the summer and some frying pans at Christmas and have nearly $100 I can spend there right now.

Take care,
Pat

Thank you, I think I have some old air miles.

We get air miles at the grocery store. One air mile for every $20 spent. An air mile is worth ten cents at the store, but I have to sign up on my account to use them. I think I'll toss my card, too. Not worth carrying it around and I can get more rewards by just using my credit card once in a while - it gets me 1% but costs the merchant three times that.

I have been juggling cards to keep getting 5% or more on certain categories. SEARS Citi card gave 20% cash back on all purchases for the last quarter so we used that one almost exclusively. How can you beat THAT.

This quarter we are using CHASE Freedom Card to get 5% on all ground transportation and thus we charge all amounts we put on our MTA bus and subway cards. Card gives 1% on everything else.

In the past, we've used air miles to get hundreds of dollars of just like cash gas coupons, good at Shell and a couple other places. Today, we went to Safeway, and they asked us if we wanted to use your air miles against our grocery purchase, we had $10 taken off. Previous to this, last year we bought $60 worth of groceries on air miles at Safeway. Don't let them expire, use them for food or other purchases.

I have 150 thousand Aeroplan miles on my CIBC visa. My understanding is as long as you keep using the card to purchase, the miles will not be surrendered. The problem with securing flights with this card, is booking 6 months out is a requirement, or a 2 hour flight becomes 12 with all the transfers, such crap!

Airmiles is much more charitable in this regard. I've booked flights and hotel rooms with two weeks lead time.

Hi Swing, check you this link, all you have to do is show your air miles card, and you can cash out your air miles. 95 AM = $10.
