My husband is trying to restore some stacking tables. He wants to know if anyone has a good method or tips for removing veneer from the substrate. Thanks

I did successfully remove veneer from an old night table once, I heated it with a paint remover gun. I guess it depends on the type of glue used to adhere the veneer.

I was going to suggest a heat gun too. Don't know if a blow dryer would be hot enough, it might be.

Heat guns are cheap and can even be rented. I have used a heat gun for removing floor tile. The thermostat in a hair dryer usually clicks in with heavy closeup use.
https://www.homedepot.ca/en/home/p.heat-gun-125a-w-9pcs-accessories-in-bmc.1000

Price 19 to 41 dollars.

I used a damp tea towel and an iron to remove tiles. That might be worth a try too.

Now that is hard work. The heat gun is almost instantaneous.

The heat gun is probably better but those tiles came right up after being ironed through the cloth.

Thanks again. I've discovered that I was wrong about what he is refinishing. It is an antique treadle Singer sewing machine in a lovely case. The top of the case is ruined but the rest just needs some TLC. The machine is perfect and perfectly beautiful, in working order. So, he's made it a project to get the top/lid into shape. He may carve a new top or do some woodburning whatever he thinks might look best. I'm excited to see the finished product. When he's done I'll get one of my progeny to take a picture and post it on here for all you helpful people.

Will be looking forward to the picture, I have one that was bought at a garage sale by a friend, and it sits in my living room. The machine works well, but I much prefer my electric one though I did learn to sew on my grandmother's treadle.

Judy, are you sure that the machine has a veneer finish? All the treadle machines that I have encountered always had solid wood coated with varnish!

I don't know. John thinks so. However it had been stored in a leaky barn and the top layer is coming off in strips so, one way or the other it has to be stripped off and a fresh layer put on, I guess. Too bad we don't live closer like we used to and you could see it. You know how inept I am or I would send you a picture. Thanks for advice anyway. :)

How are you feeling?

I'm feeling not too badly, considering! Ask me in April as I get my next test then. The pills were worse than the affliction.

If you are having strips of wood separating from its base its very likely that it is in fact, veneer!
